Tire pressure for 26" Goodyears.

Had a rough landing and takeoff the other day on a rocky strip. I'm wondering if lower tire pressure might have helped. I've got a C170B on 26in goodyears and keep them at 10psi. Anyone running them with lower pressure? Thanks......Bryan.

Don't. In fact, at that pressure, you really need to have slippage marks and monitor the tires after every landing.

Some folks have run them as low as 8, but you are right on the edge there, and one rough landing can shear a valve stem--and then there you are...

This is true of any tube type tire, and this is why the Bush Wheels are tubeless.

These are NOT Bushwheels, and they won't provide nearly the capability that Bushwheels do. Don't try it. Use them conservatively, and they'll work fine.

Bryan, have you ever sheared a valve stem? Or do you have the tire secured to the wheel (screws,monkey-glue, etc)?
That's one big advantage of the BW's over conventional tire/tube arrangements-- no valve stem shearing issues at low pressure.

Thanks for the advice. Guess I'll save up for the real deal.

One way is to drill through the three holes in the wheel that hold the hubcaps on and use long screws with sharpened ends. I'm sure it's not approved, but sure seems to help. Won't make bushwheels out of them though. When you get the bushwheels, I have a home for those blimp tires.

Just be careful screwing those tires onto the rims that you don't screw them into the tubes  .

The other problem with the Goodyears is that the sidewalls just arent' very flexible. So, you get down to a certain pressure--about 10 or 12 pounds, and the issue is no longer inflation pressure, but sidewall stiffness.

They are fine tires for 99% of what MOST folks do with little airplanes. For the rest, Bush Wheels are the deal.

I can tell you, however, that I've met guys in some pretty ugly places with Cubs on 8.50 X 6.00 tires. It's just that one "oops" that makes big tires worthwhile.
