Top gear race

Well I got a bit of fun coming up. I'm heading to the town of chinchilla on Thursday in the drifter, so it certainly wont be a quick trip, with a fuel stop in Warwick on the way. But I'm meeting my mate out there at the airport. We where talking about what time we each plan on getting there, and how long the trip will take and then we each had a light bulb moment !!!

He lives further north from me so the drive is 4 hours and 10 minutes according to google maps.

I have a very slow cruise speed for a plane at 50 knots and need to do a big sweep around Oakey military airspace. Making my planned trip time 3 hours 45 minutes. But I need to put down and top up on the way.

So the go is Thursday morning we are going to be sitting in our modes of transport on the phone to each other, and aren't allowed to start engines till the same time, then its on! Last one to the chinchilla airport cafe shouts lunch!

Would love to know what your thoughts are, and where your money is! Top gear tried it
Once before stacking a Bugatti Veyron against a 182 across France and the car won, now its Honda civic vs 53hp drifter across Queensland.....well some of it anyway!

who will be the victor???

Re: Top gear race

Remember, the only reason the 182 lost is because Captain Slow was flying! :?

If you want to do it like Top Gear, fly with the flaps down...

Re: Top gear race

So the race has begun! Status is the wind is very much in the planes favour, but the weather isnt with some big diversions happening due to cloud and rain....

Don't forget to call in an erratic driver in a Honda Civic.

Re: Top gear race

Top gear also tried this race. Unfortunately it did not work out too well for the chopper.

Re: Top gear race

Well the race has been one! but before I tell you the results, a quick map as to the routes!

Image

The purple line was the cars route, the yellow line was my intended route, but the red line is the route I ended up happening to take, totaling 250 nm.....now dont get me wrong, Ive flown much further than that but in a drifter, thats not as short flight as it may seem!

there was a large weather pattern that rolled in over night covering completely the first leg of the journey so the detour had to be made, which also ment an extra fuel stop.....

but the winner......

by no lie, 1, maybe 2 minutes........

.......the Drifter!!! (suck it honda!!!)

the race was to the cafe, I had to have tied down and he had to have parked, I saw him driving up the road to the airport as I was in circuit, and he was finding a park as I was tieing down. Thankfully there was a plane about to come in to take a bunch of fly in fly out miners to Brisbane so finding a park proved to be difficult otherwise the result would likley have been reversed. We where expecting it to be tight but you cold not have planned for that! I must admit I flew one bloody tight circuit!

I unfortunately, being a twit, forgot to take my camera so I didnt get any in flight photos, but I did grab a few for you guys on the ground with my phone. I managed to fly my previously intended route on the way home, but with 20 knot head winds, which when your cruise in 50 knots, is a bitch!

after putting down at casino to asses the weather and work out if I was happy to cross the range, I made another stop at Stanthorpe pictured below. took the opportunity to shuffle a bit of fuel around and just check on the fuel status in general as My burn was much higher playing ups and downs over the ranges with the weather.

Image

Next stop was Millmerman, another fuel shuffle, could defiantly have gone without this stop, but race or not, there is no point taking risks. as the where alot of fires on the next leg, and theirs nothing to say one of them couldn't have had me diverting. Plus its a lovely little airport of which I love flying into.

Image

Final stop, the destination, Chinchilla! thats the Mines Donier that thankfully ment the parking spots where taken up!

Image

went for another fly in the arvo and got this photo of popsy before she went to bed. the victor in all her glamour!

Image

lastly my fuel stop in warwick on the way home. Home to Australias biggest Rodeo, Warwick is also a great spot for gliding. I go out there a bit for it.
