I'm trolling for a new glare shield.
If you've had a bad experience with a particular shield, would you let me know?
If you've had a good experience would you let me know?
If you've heard of any good or bad experiences?

Anyway, about all I've come up with so far is the fiberglass option from Selkirk or the Ashby glareshield from Spruce. I've been warned that spruce is know for selling so-so products. I would like to add lighting to the lip of the glareshield, as my goal is to remove my overhead source during my renovation.

I put a Selkirk in my 170, and my Skywagon came with a Selkirk. Both were solid products. The caveat with Selkirk is that their stuff (in my experience with glareshileds, flap tunnels, foam, ext baggage etc...) NEVER fits right. Expect to spend a bunch of time with the Dremel getting it to fit. If you are patient and good with your hands, or your AP is not billing you per hour, you will undoubtedly be happy with it in the end.

I have no experience with Spruce, but I do know that any other "house brand" item I have ordered from Spruce has either been returned cuz it was junk, or cost me twice as much as the install ruined stuff and I had to redo/pay for a fix and then buy the better item in the end.

Regarding Avion Research - I left a voicemail and sent an email a couple of weeks ago regarding the purchase of two new yokes, with the intent of also getting a glare shield and getting a new panel cut. They have not responded.

I installed a Selkirk glare shield in my 170. My experience was the same as bigrennas. That said, I just made a poster board template to fit, then cut the glare shield. It was really pretty easy, actually.. The Selkirk has a "roll" on the aft end, so installing lighting under there is easy. The extra material allows you to decide how far out you want the shield to protrude, not a bad feature, actually.

I'd go there again.

I also had the Selkirk fit experience and also plan on using their stuff again anyway. Their products are well made, you just have to be willing to spend the time to make it fit.
Avion is very nice and very expensive and hard go get ahold of. We used the Selkirk glareshield in the 206 then used 1/2" Selkirk foam under the overhang and used a (not certified) LED light strip from Spruce and double sided taped it on. It's bootleg and can't go through an annual but is a two minute remove and install. A little not-by-the-book but it worked really well.

Selkirk glare shield is a great product. My windshield was out and it was a decent install.

A glareshield doesn't seem that tough to fabricate, a friend did one: used the old one as a template, made it out of some sort of fiberboard (soft aluminum might be another choice), then used contact cement to glue on some fabric. It was just as nice as any glare shield I've ever seen.
You can use your choice of type & color of covering, build in all the overhang you want at the aft end, and add eyebrow lighting if desired.

All true, but realize that sunlight is not a friend to many fabric types, so choose your covering with that in mind. Also, be sure to get a burn cert for any fabric that goes into the airplane to be squeaky clean, paper-wise.

The Selkirk glare shield is pretty easy to install, and will no doubt look good for many years.
