Need a little help transferring waypoints from garmin to gar

My dad's 296 quit picking up satellites, so he reset it. Picks up the satellites, but lost all the user waypoints.

So, I go to map source and receive all the waypoints from my 496 and sent them to his 296. Now mine are gone. #-o So, I try the reverse and receive from the 296 and send to the 496, nothing changes. :(

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks Gary

Gary, do you get an error message from EasyGPS? Or does it quietly fail?

Can you export your waypoints from EasyGPS to a common file format? If you do, perhaps someone else can try to send them to their unit to confirm your data is good.

What are your settings in the 496 for Serial Data Format (Menu > Setup > Interface) and Transfer mode?

Perhaps do a manual delete of all your waypoints in the 496 prior to attempting the upload (Menu > Points > User + [Menu > Delete All])

The app I use is GPS Babel. Perhaps try it if nothing else works. I've only heard good things about EasyGPS so I don't imagine it's the app.

Hey Z

I recently sent my old 496 to Garmin for repair/upgrades/battery. This is a new unit, apparently easier to send me a new one than fix the old one. When they did, they would not transfer my 5 years of waypoints  , but I had given most of them to my dad so I was able to retrieve them back from his.

Then he had to reset his because of being unable to receive satellite signals. Doing that,he lost his user waypoints, so I was trying to put mine back in his which went fine, but in doing so, I lost mine, and am now trying to get them back from his.

Maybe they are just getting wore out running back and forth :?

No error message

Settings SDF=Garmin Data Transfer
Transfer Mode=Host

I had a couple user waypoints in there, but I have deleted them now and will keep trying. I will try the link you sent me.

Are those settings cool??

Thanks Gary

Yeah those settings are correct.

Can you export or save your waypoints to a Garmin .GDB file? Garmin .MPS file?

If so you might be able to use GPS Babel to get these formats into your 496.

Download the program, install it.
Select your input file.
Select your output device (Garmin 496, must be plugged in to be selected)
Configure any filters or options.
Send the data.

Hey
Was going to check the settings on the 296. Under the settings heading there is no tab for interface. Where would I go to check the settings for this, and should they be the same as the ones in the 496?
Thanks again Gary

Just so ya know

I got my waypoints =D> Life is good.

Probably had them all along. I was looking in the wrong place. I was looking in nearest/user, thought they would show up there, but at home with no antennae, I guess not.

I started to put them in manually and when putting the first one in, it said it was already there.

So, I think I then went to direct to/user, and there they were, :D

So thanks for the help.

Later Gary
