Project: 180 Skywagon - The On-Going Saga

Early last month I purchased a 1966 Cessna 180H in CA. I had been looking for the right one for almost two years often criss-crossing the country to check out a lead. Last Dec in that pursuit, I came across (and fell in love with) a 52' C170 which I ended up buying and flying home. It was my first airplane, and as a relatively low time (and even lower time TW) pilot, it was all completely new.

Thinking I would keep the airplane for a long long time, much was done to the airplane as inspired by several here in the community as well as getting a great in-person look at N185GM whilst out at Beegles. I drank from the fire hose as things moved rapidly along. In the end, we had a one hell of an airplane.

Research into upgrading my C170 as well as the beginning thoughts of upgrading to a 180HP engine quickly set me back on the path of looking for a solid C180. It was going to be hard to let the C170 go, especially after all the hard work, but I knew that if I even attempted to start spending more $$$ on the C170 with upgraded Garmin radios and GPS systems, I would be committed for sure.

It all happened pretty quick, but before I knew it, I was out looking at a C180 that I had seen for sale for at least three years. The price had come way down and it seemed like a good deal. The A/C certainly had nothing special as far as avionics went, and the interior was pretty knackered, but it was a good, solid (relatively speaking as 50 yr old TW airplanes go) damage free bird. A good solid platform to start it all over again. A good pre-buy confirmed my thoughts and before I knew it, papers were signed and I was on my way out to L.A. to fly the new machine back to Boston.

At any rate... I thought I might start a place to yap a bit about where this project will be going. I'm grateful for BCP and all I have learned from those that choose to share here. I hope I can give back even just a little bit.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

One of the reasons that I went ahead and jumped on the C180 was the fact that lots of the goodies that I had purchased for the C170 would transfer right over to the C180, and first on the list were the tires...

Fortunately Alaskan Bushwheels allowed the transfer of the STC so it was quick and easy work to install the 8.5x10 wheels and tires. Of course while the airplane was on the hoist, we took the time to upgrade the brakes with new Cleveland double pucks and HD Axles.

The upgraded brakes on the C170 sure made all the difference, and now with a much heavier airplane and larger tires, these are a must!

You just absolutely have to love pilots. Let's see here, I can go to a destination school in Florida or Arizona and get my instrument rating for $7K or I can spend a hundred big ones upgrading a couple of airplanes. Greg, you are with out a doubt a man after my own heart. Onward with the quest!!

That's the Kenmore STC, with the 206 middle seats, right? Do you have float fittings?

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Yep. 206 seats. They are on the heavy side though at 16.5lbs each. I have a WB for in and out. Once the steel springs and heavy upholstery are tossed they will be much lighter. On my C170, I shaved 5lbs each seat.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Sounds like they are just slightly heavier than the bench seat. Mine weighs 30lbs.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

One of the things that I really am interested in is keeping the weight down. The W&B on this plane is paper only and the last time it was on scales was when it left Cessna. When I left L.A. we were supposedly 1720lbs. (my bet is a good 100lbs over that anyway) I gotta get her on the scales to see where she really stands.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Have a look at these guys for flooring. Would not go any other way. Mine weighs maybe albs and looks very good!

Also my rear "Sling seat" only weighs about 5 lbs., maybe...

Just idea's for you.

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

Cool idea. What was the weight?

On my C170 I ordered a couple of yards of Aerofloor DOT http://www.aipsource.com/prodcat.aspx?Id=14&page=8024

I cut it custom and it was super light. I think it was just under 2lbs for the entire floor. Not very thick at all, but light indeed.

Where did your sling seat come from?

Re: New C180H - The Madness Begins...

The sling seat I have in my 170 came from Fairbanks Aero Services. It's on the TCDS for the 170 series. Fairbanks Aero Services has been out of business for a looonnnnggg time, however, and I don't know if anyone picked up their products.

It's a pretty simple system, but my preference would still be either the Atlee Dodge or BAS (or whoever sells them now) folding seats. Many, MANY times it's nice to have ONE rear seat, and space forward for heavy stuff.
