Transporting an A65 in a 185

Anybody have any tips for hauling a A65 in a 185? Can you do it with the kidney and carb on?

Try to find a racing slick or other type of fat tire and put it on that. Might work......

Like Kurt said. Crop duster and pipeline mechanic always hauled complete engines like that.

Did you repair the the engine that broke or are you replacing it? What was the problem that caused the malfunction?
When you transport the engine,be sure to empty the oil out of it.

That's the plan. Was more interested in hearing from someone who's tried it and how it was getting it into the airplane, past the yokes, and into the back. Obviously the door would have to come off and the seats out.

A friend of a friend who is upgrading took pity on me and is giving me a deal on a lower time motor. This will get me back in the air pretty quick and then I can have the other motor overhauled over the summer. Won't really know what the damage is until then. I'll keep you posted.

It is good to have a spare. Glad to see you going back with A65. Why mess up a perfectly designed airplane.

Re: Transporting an A65 in a 185

I've carried the assembled bottom end of an O-200 in the back seat of a PA-28...so a C185 should be a non issue. Take the right seat out when moving the engine in and out? With the kidney on there, I'd second the idea of an old tire to rest it on; have seen people store them inverted on an old tire as well. And just caution to the fragile bits (maybe pull the carb/airbox off).

Oh, and revel in the fact that you will have gotten "a plane with an A-65 in it" over a 120 knots. :D

It might be easiest if you can come up with or weld up a motor mount attach it to the engine mounting points then screw it down to a mini pallet or wood platform and stand it up so the prop flange is up then secure it with motorcycle straps,

Maybe not pertinent, but I'll throw it out there anyway for future reference: The national commercial hardware chain FASTENAL has an inhouse shipping department. It seems they need to move stock between their various outlets, and as a result have a set up transportation department. If you can put it on a pallet, they will move it for you, cheap,, and it can be bigger then a pallet, just so they can hoist it with a forklift. You get on the 'net, and it's a quick and easy process, even for me, to start things going. THEN, you deliver "it" (whatever it may be) to your local Fastenal outlet, along with your case # for your shipment. Your local guy gets on the net and in a couple minutes you are good to go. Your receiver goes down to his Fastenal outlet to pick up, no delivery. Cheap, much cheaper then UPS etc. or regular motor freight. A few days slower, but worth the wait! I first used them to ship a 150 lb back hoe bucket back east from Idaho, less then 100 bucks, they just put it on my account, the entire process was painless and simple. I first heard about this, even though I'd been a commercial account holder there for years, not through them, but on a small tractor forum. Not a secret thing, but not well known, cheap enough to make shipping things somewhat of a game changer, anyone want to buy a 5' snow pusher for a compact tractor? I'll split the shipping with you

I put a 85 continental in the back of my 55 180 , removed rear seat ( took out fronts while loading ) and sat it in 2 tires stacked on top each other . Indiana to Florida no problem

Thats what i wanted to hear. Did you leave the kidney and carb on and stuff them down inside the tires, or flip it on its back?

Call your buddy with a Maule or “Just buy a Maule” [emoji23]

When we had to transport our C85 the mechanic had us set it on a single tire with the engine on its back. Seems that would be the easiest.
