Travel Writer Hitchhiking on Planes to 50 States

Hi everyone!

I am a travel writer who is "hitching" rides on private planes across the across US in an effort to visit all 50 states. I've done several so far, checked out Oshkosh, and plan on heading to the AOPA Aviation Summit in a few weeks.

Right now, I'm in Las Vegas for an EAA get together on the 12th (tomorrow) and am heading to Montana on the 23rd. I was hoping to visit Utah for a few days in between and see some of the back country and parks. You can follow my trip on JetHiking.com (I'm blogging about it) and we are working on a PBS TV series. However, right now it's just me while we search for more sponsors.

If anyone can help me out with a ride, please let me know. I know it's a tight window, so if it doesn't work this time around maybe later on in my journey. I'll be doing this for a while :)

Thanks!

Amber

That's pretty cool. You have a distinct advantage though.

I'm in Albuquerque, headed for California on the 23rd with a flexible route. Flying a Rans S7, a tandem two seater (low and slow). Possibly some backcountry strips and camping depending on route. If your packing light there's room.

As an alternate, New Mexico is celebrating 100 years of flight

We could do this. Could possibly pick you up in the Denver area.

Wow..thank you for the responses everyone! It was one of those ideas that started with "What if..." and very quickly became reality. I'm carrying a backpack that is about 30 pounds and my book bag for my laptop, wallet, cell phone etc...

I'm headed to Montana next on the 23rd, so I suppose Idaho would make sense to try and shoot for after that. So far the route has been random and sporadic - but that's how it goes!

So, I am currently in Seattle and I'm stuck. I just found out that my ride to Oregon had to cancel because of a medical problem.

If anyone knows someone that can get me out of Washington, let me know!

I was the first Idaho pilot to offer her a ride, and I had to laugh when she emailed me and one of the first things she asked was whether or not I had an IFR rating  I think I responded something like "don't have one, don't want one, couldn't give me one, not my kind of flying" I then referred her to some of my past posts here, and that was that, I never heard back. I guess the name "Jet hiking gypsy" should have been a tip off. Good call on her part probably.

Should have said "yes, I am IFR rated". When she shows up for her ride and your up flying low and she ask's, "I thought you were IFR rated?". You say, "I am, I Follow Roads & Ridge lines" :D
