Re: Tree Landing

Divine intervention is the only reason I can think of that this was not me a few times. Thats the bitch of flying low powered planes around here.

Here is a link with more pics and bit more of the story

Re: Tree Landing

If he was on the rudder pedals aggressively, putting the nose between two trees was nicely done.

Re: Tree Landing

Sink over trees is a strange but corroborated phenomenon. I'd hazard an uninformed guess that he may have settled into the tree tops more that flown through them. If so, supple, spring birch tree tops is about the nicest catcher's mitt you could hope for around here. Particularly in a 1200 lb plane with huge wing area.

Re: Tree Landing

Glad all ended well for this pilot. This proves the theory that Taylorcrafts do float.

Re: Tree Landing

But...then what? How do you get it down without additional damage? Crane with slings at the firewall and around the fuselage?

(Or maybe cut down all the trees and clear the stumps in front of it for a few hundred feet or so and then cut the ones around it and fly it down as the trees fall under it...stuff like that works in the cartoons!)

They brought in a chopper the next morning and picked it up from the tail. Was incredibly simple and a total non-issue. Plane was back in front of his hangar in less than an hour. Some damaged ribs and some fabric work looks like the extent of the damage!!! Unbelievable!

It all looks good, "from a distance".

Re: Tree Landing

Yet another good story that old T-Craft has to tell, any other plane without it's high lift wing would have crashed through, it's wing develops lift even when at a complete standstill.

Soft ground, as stated, would have made a crane worthless, plus rigging it would have been a bitch!. What a great happy ending =D>
