TSIO-520 vs IO-550
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

How does the performance of an IO550 compare to a TSIO520 in a 206? Specifically, for part 91 flying in Idaho.

I’d choose the turbo every time. You don’t have to be much above sea level before the turbo will have the horsepower advantage. If you’re looking at your overhaul options, I wouldn’t consider taking the turbo off an already equipped airplane. I’ve owned carbureted, turbo, and now fuel injected, naturally aspirated. Only strip in Idaho I tried was Magee. My T210 kicked butt in there. Would never have traded it for an IO550. Turbo has a weight penalty, but hundreds of density feet higher, that too becomes worth the extra weight.

If increased performance is your primary consideration, go turbocharged.
My experience is that Continental cylinders don't last very long when boosted. They may go the distance if you really baby the engine, but I've seen 3 or 4 cylinders go tango uniform in 250 hours on more than a few TSIO-550/520s.
IO-550s typically make TBO if you treat them well. They are AWESOME engines!
The turbocharged engine will burn considerably more fuel.

Middle Fork Aviation puts IO550s in their 206s. Call Pete and ask his opinion. I’m sure there is a very good reason that’s the engine he chooses.
