Tucson-San Diego-Madera-Bishop

Heading out in the 185 on Thursday to visit family.

Tucson (actually KAVQ) first to golf with the wife at Tucson National on Friday. Any tips about KAVQ, cars, etc?

San Diego (actually KMYF) on Saturday. Any tips on cheapest/best place to tie down?

Madera (KMAE) on Wednesday. Any tips on cheapest/best place to tie down?

Bishop on Thursday. Want to fly fish The Owens on Friday (20th). Having a hard time finding a guide. Anyone here fly-fish the area?

I can't help you with any of those locations but if you find yourself coming back through New Mexico then look me up in G-town.

These guys are good. My brother has used them a couple different times. http://thetroutfly.com/

We have been fishing the eastern side of the sierras for years. Love both the upper and lower owens. The site I linked will give you a ton of information.

I know there has been some big fire activity outside of Bishop and farther north the last couple of days.... not sure of the current activity

If you get to Bishop, make sure you go visit two non-aviation places of interest:

Meadow Farms Smokehouse on the north end of town, just after highway 395 turns West. Fantastic smoked meats, jerky, hunter sausage, etc. Expensive but top shelf first class. People come from across the country to that place.

Schat's Dutch Bakery, on the west side of the main drag about in the middle of town. I think one of the kids renamed it Erik Schat's after the old man died, but for all of us old broken down sailplane drivers it will always be Schat's. Their "Sheepherder Bread" is famous worldwide.

I'd forgotten all about Sheepherder Bread, thanks. Last time I was in Bishop was back in the late 70's. I had my own mechanic shop in Santa Barbara and when I wasn't busy I'd jump in my Ford Courier and drive 7 hours to fish the Owens or Cottonwood for a couple of hours, then drive 7 hours back home to get ready for the next day. It was good to be young back then.

Continuing on the food tour of the Owen's Valley, another local specialty is Bruno's Sierra Nevada Chileno Peppers. They replaced Swab's High Sierra Chileno Peppers when that company folded. Schat's ought to have them. They make great stuffed olives as well. =P~

My hangar is 10mi from Madera. Sierra Sky Park (E79). Tie downs and you can stay at the hangar (bath and kitchen). No fuel at E79, we fuel at Madera or FCH. PM if this helps you.
