Here's a recent pic I found looking east down the old runway. Looks like it's still do-able with some big tires. What a jewel this place would have been. There is not ONE public strip in the Sierras south of Tahoe.

36.38 North / 118.26 West

Was made a designated wilderness area in the mid-70's, but was still in use until the mid-80's. Not sure why it can't be used anymore.

Are you saying that Alpine County is no longer open?
Used to fly there in my old 85 hp J5.

It is better to be late in this world, than early in the next.

Re: Tunnel meadows, California

This thread needs to go away as that place has had zero attention for a long time. Lots of places like that around. Its a really cool spot...

Alpine Co is also a ver cool spot, but paved....good fishing access

Re: Tunnel meadows, California

Good idea not to spend a lot of time there as it is in a wilderness area.

Sorry to resurrect an oldie, but I just saw this:

Actual color footage of approach and landing at Tunnel Meadows taken in the mid '60s. From the FAA no less!

(Starting around the 26:00 minute mark.)
