Re: Turbo 250 HP Franklin?

Are you thinking about an engine for your FrankenmegaMaule?

Could an IO-540 non-turbo be an alternative? It would be more flexible to operate and gives you 10 extra stallions under the cowling, at least - with high compression pistons you could have 40 more horses... Possibly cheaper to maintain compared to a turbo?

Sorry if I'm jumping off at an angle. [-X

Re: Turbo 250 HP Franklin?

I have the 220 Franklin, I don't have the Lycoming!!
And there is no smother running engine than the Franklin.
Oh yes, I love turbo's!!
10,000 ft and still having rated horsepower is AWESOME!!

6A-350-C2 2800rpm 10.5cr 215hp
6A-350-D1A 3200rpm 10.5cr 230hp
6AS-350-A 2800rpm 7.4cr 250hp @2800 5min SL to 15000, 235hp @2800 continuous to 16500ft, AiResearch turbo TE-0657
6AS-335-A 3200rpm 7.0cr 260hp @3200 5min to 10000, 240hp @3200 continuous to 15000, AiResearch turbo TE-0634, this is a 335 cu in motor where others are 350 cu in.
There are other models of the 335 at 200hp and lower.

Re: Turbo 250 HP Franklin?

Jeremy, thanks
Do you have what the MP is on the turboed 350?
Is there any reason not to put a turbo on the 220 with a manual waste gate?
Seems like if I go with electronic ignition and fuel, injection , should be able to make it work.
Thank for them info! Where do you keep all that stuff, you can't have that all in your head!!

GT,
You could ask Pete Gross over here in Kalispell. He has one in his experimental Stinson. I know he's done alot of work and research on it. PM me if you need his number. He's the guy that has the 195 project I steered you towards before.

Re: Turbo 250 HP Franklin?

There were two M4-250 which were turboed 220hp 350 cu in. They had manual wastegate. I'm not positive which of the two turboed engines were used but probably 6AS-350-A. If I dig for a while I might findmore but I think Seaplanes Inc of WA might have done the STC as it does not show on Maules TD sheets.
One was damaged and being rebuilt in CO and the other was flying in Illinois I think.
Not sure where they are now.

Re: Turbo 250 HP Franklin?

With such a high CR already(10.5:1), there isn't much room other than to normalize for altitude, not sure it would be worth($) the effort.

Is that one in CO at Beagles or? I would like to see it.
