...that's the question. Anybody know if Tuweep is still open? I'm planning on going from the west coast to upstate NY in the Maule in a couple of weeks. I'd love to spend the night on the North Rim if I can do it without doing a stretch at Terminal Island as a result. Maybe I should use some 2 in masking tape over the registration? Or... any nice places nearby that would satisfy the craving?

Aridzona State Aeronautics site shows it as closed. Also, it doesn't show up on the airport directory in www.aeroplanner.com anymore. Too bad for us.

It's closed. I think Mark Hawkins was working on getting it reopened before he passed away. I don't know what will happen now.
I bet Red Creek is beautiful this time of year. Kind of out of the way though. Just a thought.

But the strip is still there, unless they did a Mayor Daley, Meigs Field to it and dug it up. The current Las Vegas Sectional shows it as a "U" (unverified ) and the last activity I see on the AZ strip seems to indicate that folks are working to get a lease on the site. The last info I can find seems to be from Feb of this year. I wonder if the big white X's are still there.

March of 2004, my son and I flew into Tuweep. What a neat place. We mtn biked to the rim about 7 miles on day one. Day two we inspected the old homestead. Those folks in those days were a bunch tougher than I. I would post a photo or two but I haven't figured that out yet.

A real shame that minor beurocrats like to screw things up.

Mark submitted this for publication in last spring's UBCP newsletter, not too long before his accident. Somebody on the APA recreational airport committee should have some up-to-date info. Anyone know anybody on that committee?

The Arizona Pilots Association has good news. Things are proceeding at a rapid pace on the lease of Tuweep airstrip on the north rim of the Grand Canyon, formerly L50. We have been able to acquire the required $5 mil of general liability insurance and are now proceeding with the Native American Cultural survey. It is our hope to have the strip leased in the next month. Stay tuned for clean-up and maintenance information. The recreational airport committee of the APA is going to be managing the strip and quarterly clean-ups are planned. The strip is being operated as a private airstrip on public land and use will require registration and permission from the Arizona Pilots association. We hope that in addition to a link for donations we can provide an online registration form at the APA web site: www.azpilots.org Donations will be received thru the Recreational Aviation Foundation as well. Since the Arizona Pilots Association is sponsoring this venture, membership in the APA is encouraged.
