Ultimate Airport Bike

Well, here it is. The ultimate lightweight airport bike. Fits easily in baggage, folds down small and is light as can be. Now if it didn't cost so blasted much ..... about $4,500 FOB New Zealand....oh well.........

I can understand why it's called the Yike bike after hearing the price!

Re: Ultimate Airport Bike

You tail dragger pilots ought to feel right at home with that bike. I agree that sticker price makes the name appropriate.

Looks like a low timer doesn't have to worry about a ground loop but let's see it in a crosswind.

Looks to me that the biggest potential problem would be braking too hard. I bet you would be on your "nose" in an instant.

Doesn't quite fit in my baggage compartment, but I like my airport bike....my first solo on it was almost as exciting as my first airplane solo!

If you want to go up, pull back on the controls. If you want to go down, pull back farther.

The Yike "bike" doesn't have pedals and has relatively limited range. Run out of battery power and I guess you get to push it, carry it or drag it to your destination.

No thanks. I'll take my old folding Bike Friday.

I had the sound turned off. I did notice the lights and signals. Down a steep hill, anti lock or not, would scare me.

Re: Ultimate Airport Bike

Tom, All kidding aside, I don't know if I would have the cajones to ride that thing down a steep hill of any size. I'm old, I know I break, and I think I'm a bit chicken too.....lol :P

I've got "Tote Goat" powered by a "Continental " single clyinder engine -4 stroke . It'll do 25-30 flat out ,tow cars or trucks and will shuttle around airport or back country. I've taken to Arizona ,Utah back county strips and had a little hauler for water people and supplies. It will go up and down 45 degree grade with ease over almost any terrain and up to 8-10 inches of water. I have a ski for front if snow is about and I need to get to town foe taco's .I think this one was built in mid 60's for USFS or military. Weighs about 170 lbs. I have "ramp" that I can load tote goat into 182 with seats out. Secured to back inside r/h wall and here we go.

I've also got a 3 wheel about 4 ft. long electric zoomie that needs batteries that's got a seat and small luggage cart . Only weighs 40 lbs -maybe 10-15 mph max for short distance -not very good for the backcountry but ok around airport.

I also have a fold up Mountian bike that I've used a few times (wife says it should be used a lot more) about 20-30 lbs. Looks cool but
limited (for me anyway) to airport hopping.

Re: Ultimate Airport Bike

Looks pretty damn cool to me, but like any "extreme" vehicle it has its limits. This is a limited transportation device that appears to have many potential uses, and many potentially incorrect uses. Steep downhill slalom is obviously not on the menu. It ain't a mountain bike and the Grizzly bear bow-hunters can pass on it.

But going from the airport to the motel or the coffee shop at the majority of fly-in destinations seems pretty valid. Those of us who do live in the city can definitely see the usefulness. It looks like a big improvement over that "segway" personal transport. The cost will eventually come down, but it will always be a bigger investment than a traditional bicycle.

That thing took a lot of cleverness and hard work to get it done that well. It could make a big change in the way millions of people do things. For people who live and work on 100 acres of mountainous ranch land, it will be of little value. For city dwellers and airplane owners it could be pretty useful. Saves a lot of gas, a lot of traffic, and a lot of space.
