Uncle Jorgy

Here's an article about my wife's "Uncle" Jorgy. I've not flown with him but I've certainly experienced his unusual navigational skills while halibut fishing out of Valdez. By the time I met him he had already lost most of his vision to macular degeneration, but while I "drove" the boat to various fishing holes he knew exactly where we were and thoroughly chewed me out when I was outside the channel. Amazing character. The way he got into the Alaska Territorial Guard at age 15 was because he was the only person in Nome who knew morse code!

Re: Uncle Jorgy

Jorgy is the genuine item....a class act, and a superb pilot. He's got more great stories than most everyone else up there :D And, he earned everything he ever got.

Oh, yeah, he's a nice guy too.

And, there's a book called "Jorgy" out there as well. Not a superbly written book, frankly, but a great story nevertheless.

EB, count yourself lucky to have Jorgy in the family! He's certainly a legend. I met him at the Airman's show a few years back, and consider it an honor to have had a brief conversation with him.
