US Route 36 Fuel Stops

I am planning to fly a J3 from Colorado to Ohio next week along Route 36 to avoid all the radio airports. I am looking for information on the small FBOs to avoid and also the ones to seek out because they are extra nice. It's a 65 hp with only the one tank, so stops will be often. John

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

Paul, I did buy a cub and I do plan on an extra "five" on the front seat. There are extra struts and misc parts to take, so my buddy's will be leading the way in a Cherokee Jeep with another 10 gallons on the roof. I plan on some "soybean field" fuel stops along the highway with them too.

We are going to take turns with the old girl. I suspect Greg will have another Vimeo production out of this trip.

St Francis, KS is a nice friendly apt with some great grass runways.

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

I wish I can help you out with fuel stop and FBO info. But I have been running across 36, I-72, and I-74 the last couple years. It's a great road and a perfect bypass from the busy I-70 corridor if your driving between CO and the Mid-West. If I can think of anything, I'll post more info.

Sounds like a fun trip. I'll be looking forward to that video!

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

Try my old stomping grounds at Tuscola, Illinois, 1/2 mile south of Route 36 (K96). There is a narrow paved E-W runway or grass to land on right beside it to the south. There is a company there that works on T34's and a few hangers. In case you miss them, here is the name of someone that would be happy to open the pump for you (there is cell service) : Jerry Aktkisson, phone # is 217-253-3934. I finished harvest and came back home to Canada Thursday, or would fix you up myself. Have a good flight. Steve

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

We got the cub home last night. It was a marathon trip. Bushy, Greg, and I drove a jeep out to Colorado Springs, then Greg and I took turns flying her home to eastern Ohio. It was cold. We didn't waste time. The jeep hauled AV gas and extra parts that came with the plane, on the roof.

In western Kansas on US Route 36 on Thanksgiving morning, there is no traffic. We had some fun!! Watch for Greg's next video in the near future.

Is the J-3 for you. How is the progress on the other Scout that you have in the barn. Hope the progress is moving better than my 32 Ford.

Tim, I sold the other scout project, hence the money for the cub.

Colorado Springs? Dang, wish I knew you guys were coming out. Where did you get the cub from? Meadowlake?

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

Bmurrish, It came off a private ranch between the Springs and Meadow Lake. It was assembled at Meadow Lake then it went back to the ranch. The morning I left, the winds were gusting to 25. I waited for it to calm a little and took off from a pasture down hill with a tail wind. It was a more then a little wild for my first flight in a cub!!

I have a set of NorthWind F750 Ski's off of my J4E. As a 60" truss fell on it last winter, I don't have an immediate use for them.
Think you would have enough snow to put them on you cub to use? They have all the bungees and cables. If you do let me know and I'll put them in a box.
Sounds like a sweet ride!

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

George, I don't know what north wind skis look like. Do they work on cubs?? Is that the plane you were going to use the tandem gear on?? I do have a pair of federal's that I used on a citabria hanging on the wall, that might work with axle bushings??

I forget, does the 195 have cross wind gear?? That would be wild skiing?

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

John
The 195 has solid gear.
The North Wind skis are board ski's with a tall alum. stand and these came off of a J4E cub, similar to a J3 but side by side with 65 hp.
Should be a pull the wheels off and put the ski's on deal?? If you have some all ready that's OK
Have fun GT

John-

Any chance those are federal 2000's or 1850's?

I have a set of 1500s...looking to trade for some 2000's.

Re: US Route 36 Fuel Stops

Tim,

No, mine are 1500s too. I used them on 7KCAB Citabrias though. What if you put wider plastic bottoms on them? I have seen some where the bottoms were sticking out about an inch more then the ski.

I have some 2500's for the scout, but can't figure out how to mount them with the aluminum gear??

My best guess with that dilemma is that you need to mount them just like the cessna's are mounted. Its a bracket that clamps on the spring gear legs.
