Used price for an iCom A23?????

There's a lady selling an A23 here with a cigarette charger. It does need a new battery though. She wants $125, is that okay or too much? Never had a handheld but would like to get one......thoughts?

Thanks 8)

That actually sounds like a decent price if she hasn't dunked it or something... I think I paid over $300 for mine.

The A23 would not be my first choice I think if I could buy a handheld again. It's a good receiver but just didn't sound strong from the air while listening to my dad who was on the ground transmitting with it. We have 2 A3's as well, and they seem to be better performers. I'm not sure how the new A24 performs.

The small form factor is really nice though, it fits right in the 170 glove box.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

It's not a bad price, depends what you want it for? Performance wise the A24 is better. I personally like anything by vertex standard simply for the fact that you can drop it, leave it in water and do most anything except run it over and it will still work. If you don't need it right now both vertex and Icom do sales before most of the major aviation events (oshkosh...).

Good luck,

I own both an Icom A-22 and a Vertex A-700 (Avn + 2m Ham) and with side by side testing, the A-22 has a much better receiver and sounds better when I'm in the air (using it from the plane or receiving some one else using it on the ground).

The A-22 sits in the between the seats organizer in the plane with external antenna cable and headset jacks already in place and the A-700 sits in the truck so that I can listen to ATIS/AWOS as I pull up at the airport.

If I find a good deal on another A-22, I'll buy it as a spare and leave the A-700 at home.

I've been using an Icom A23 that I bought back in '04 and as others have said, it is a good radio. I got it with the AA battery case it was well as the nicad rechargable battery that came with it and it was well over $300. I take it all over the NW with me and other than eating batteries, it has been great. Again, if that radio you're looking at has not been trashed, you're looking at a good buy.

An A23 has been the only radio in my homebuilt for the last 3 years. I've got an external antenna. It works well for at least 40 miles with both planes at pattern altitude. The nav portion is a joke. It doesn't work worth crap unless you can see the vor antenna. If I were getting another, I'd get the non-nav version of whatever was current. Used, $125, seems pretty reasonable, considering the cheapest non-nav radios are about $200 new.

Back in my non-electric Taylorcraft days Sporty's shipped me an A23 by mistake after I ordered an A3. Seemed like a score until I looked into the battery life of the two different styles. I ended up returning the small fancy one for the big clunky one, just because the battery-powered run-time seemed significantly better when using AA batteries.
