Re: Using food coloring to test for alcohol in gas

I was gonna buy some food coloring yesterday at the grocery store, $2 for an ounce, but I noticed that it comes in a little jar with a standard mouth. Seems like unless you use some sort of attachment on the jar, or an eyedropper, it'd be pretty hard to add just a drop of food coloring to a test container of gas without making a big mess. How are you guys doing it?

The $2 red food coloring I bought at the grocery store had a snap lid top that dispenses drops. You can see it in the photos. Try a different store for another brand of food coloring?

A cap like in your pic would work fine- guess I'll have to shop around a bit. The QFC (Kroger) store I went to had 2 different brands & both appeared to have just screw-on caps. I figgered red would be the easiest to use. ??

Re: Using food coloring to test for alcohol in gas

Tested my gas samples again today and photographed the results. The food coloring was purchased from Safeway Stores at about $3 for the four little containers. Three drops in each gas sample. The jar on the left is 87 Oct with alcohol, the jar on the right is 91 Oct with no alcohol. Just filled my 76 gal tank today with the 91 Oct from the local Cenex filling station.
All is well!!

I don't see any coloring in the RH jar. Is it in a little blob at the bottom?

Yes there are three drops in each..can barely see the little droplets along the bottom of the glass. When I shook the jars the drops broke up into very tiny droplets but did not difuse into the gasoline.
