Valdez 172???

Curious if anyone has any video of the 172 that got 1st in his class. Does anyone know this airplane? Looks like it still has the O300 and he got a combined score of 244'!!!! Just looking for more info about the plane and his technique. Thanks!

Re: Valdez 172???

It was pretty much a stock 0-300 172. Im not sure if he had a big prop. He listed a Stol kit,VG's, and 850's as mods. He had an 83' foot landing and a 161 takeoff. The 83' landing was seriously awesome. There was a slight breeze but i would guess no more then 5kts at the most. He must have been super light because it was going about as slow as a light sport on landing. Really high AOA. It was just a perfect landing that got good cheers from everyone. His takeoff was 55 feet longer then the shortest takeoff but he just killed it with that great landing.

I heard he put fresh spark plug gaskets on right before he flew.

X2!!
I guess noone ever told him he should just go buy a Maule. Imagine how short he could've gotten with one of them if he can do that with a 172!
In all seriousness, very good flying sir!

I have a box for sale on eBay. Slightly used. Been annealed by a backcountry certified repair station. :D

Thanks for the useful info. I realy hope someone has it on video. I am also curious about the prop and the weight.

P.S., Maules are retarded

Re: Valdez 172???

Anyone with additional photos or video please post it... amazing what can be done with this type of aircraft.

He also might have replaced the spark plug gaskets to prevent anyone from seeing inside. There's a few things about those cylinders that respond pretty well to some massaging :)

Or playing it safe with the added cylinder pressure from a shot of nitrous.

Re: Valdez 172???

I took a couple videos of it all that day, but they went onto snapchat haha. I'll see if there's a way to get them.
His plane is a couple years older then mine, but mine is lighter, makes me regret not entering. I wanted to but decided not to! Lol. Congrats to that guy. He has one of the stol kits, and VG's, other then that stock, For performance.

A great video of the 2016 Valdez STOL and a clip of the impressive 172 landing.

Re: Valdez 172???

Both Bobby Breeden's landing and his takeoff (clips starting at 1:30 mark) should fully and authoritatively answer any question about whether "dumping" the flaps on landing, or "popping" the flaps on takeoff affects STOL performance. What a spectacular demonstration !

The straight-tail 172 landing was every bit as spectacular in its own right.

Re: Valdez 172???

Ben Brown's 172 is 0-300 powered. Nothing fancy, just a skilled flier who knows his plane inside and out, hit his aimpoint on the button. You can apply a lotta braking in a nosewheel plane, and Ben opted to leave the flaps extended for additional drag.

The 170/180 competitors often retract flaps on touchdown to help keep the tail down, while they brake as hard as they dare.

A fella I fly with won first place two or three times with an old 182. I think on asphalt, a nosewheel plane just stops easier, all things being equal.

Kudos to Matt Conklin of Boise for crushing it in the heavy touring class with his Robertson STOL 520-powered 180. Ridiculous ninety-foot takeoff and stuck the landing.
