Valdez heavy touring class

Wow! Two 182's finish first and second over the 180/185's at Valdez. Way to go, guys!!
BTW, where were the Maules?? :?

I was surprised at all the bushwheels for pavement. I can brake a lot harder on little tires than big ones, and yes I have double pucks.

I guess that's because aside from a select few guys that bring up highly specialized rigs the majority of the Gulkana turned Valdez crowd are the "run what ya brung" type. And they bring their planes in just like they fly them every day.... well... minus some gas :lol:

I understand that the longer arm of the big wheel necessitates a better brake to achieve the same braking power on the wheel, but if you have enough brake to lock up a big wheel why do you get more braking effect out of a smaller tire? I would think the increased contact patch in addition to the softer compound would lead to better braking on the big wheel. I know if I lock up the little wheels I just go sliding down the strip, don't lock up the biggies so I don't really know for sure, but guess they would stop a tad shorter... just thinking out loud here...

If you jump on Maule brakes hard, you apparently will bend the master Cyl. actuating rod. A Maule is so tail heavy that You can lock 8.50's on pavement and keep the tail down. On 29's, I can't come close to locking them. I can't even get them "hollering", but I'm afraid of bending an actuating rod. My skirt keeps blowing up in my face and I can't see :oops: .

The brake pushrods that bend on the master cylinders are the serrated/brake lock type which have been superceded with the smooth type which I hav'nt managed to bend yet.

I went out and tried it today. I can't get them to lock or squall, but I can't hold the tail down either. I think Rob'd right, the big tire gives a lot more traction and should stop quicker.
