Virb Setup

Hey guys,

After much waffling, I ordered and just today received a Garmin Virb camera with the cockpit kit that includes the audio cable and prop filter. I also got an nflightcam interior suction cup mount and exterior ball head mount, batteries, remote, SD cards, etc.

Anyways, I'm getting it setup and there are quite a few options for video. I have a basic understanding, and I imagine each application requires different settings, but what would you guys recommend for a starting point?

Factory settings is 30fps, I moved it up to 60, maybe even higher? I saw some mixed information online.

I turned stabilization on, factory setting is off

A couple I'm not sure about is the low light boost and lense correction? Low light boost makes sense to have on, but I'm not sure if there are unintended consequences, and the book says lense correction limits FOV

Thanks

Re: Virb Setup

Been using one of those in my plane for a while, here's what I use. 1080 resolution, 30 FPS, image stabilization on, low light boost on, image quality very fine. I don't use 60 FPS because it uses twice as much space on the data card, but if you plan on trying to capture still images from the video it gives you twice as many frames to try and get a good one from. I don't use the 4K video setting because you can't use image stabilization with it, and stabilization is needed for a plane. Best advice, go play with it for a while and see what gets results that you like.

Re: Virb Setup

Has anyone had issues with the iPhone App losing wifi connection with the camera regularly?

If you have not already upgraded your phone to IOS 13.6.1, there is a massive fix for Bluetooth issues in that release, so you may want to consider it. ForeFlight has already tested this release and found it to be good.

Re: Virb Setup

Yep, I'm on the latest version. The connection is actually through wifi. I saw some discussion on a forum from about 6 years ago about this, but nothing recent. I might give Garmin a call and see if they can provide some guidance.

Re: Virb Setup

I'm still having problems with the unit shutting off after an hour of recording, I have it on the wing so it's pretty tough to troubleshoot. Also there's this weird thing where I will shut it off after flight, and it'll mysteriously turn back on after a few moments.

So far, I'm frustrated and not sure I selected the right camera. But, these are such serious usability issues that I'm probably doing something wrong or the unit is defective. I'll give Garmin a call today, hopefully their customer service is good.

Re: Virb Setup

Well, I figured this would end up being a mess.

After being kicked around between various representatives and being on hold for a total of over an hour, Garmin has determined that the unit is defective. And, that the Virb has been discontinued.

Returning the Virb and ordered a GoPro.
