Walla Walla

Are there any backcountry or old ag strips in the Walla Walla vicinity? Spending a weekend there in about a month. Looking for some local morning excursions that might not be on the sectional. Any ideas?

Big Rock Flat is about 22 miles south of Heppner. Not much there, but it's a rough old strip that doesn't see much use.

The Snake River dam airstrips are novel. Little Goose is my favorite, along the river in the Snake River Canyon. Lower Granite is pretty rough, and Lower Monumental is up on a bluff above the dam.

There's an unmarked dusting strip in Huntsville that's private, but they may let you in with a good reason. Call first.

Consider calling the Minam Lodge and see if they will serve you breakfast, or fly into Red's. Both are legitimate backcountry airstrips, inside a wilderness area.

Paper Street Brewing, North of Pasco, has a ~1200 ft strip than ends in a hangar building at the North end. They have a brewery onsite, and events on the weekends with beer choir and food trucks. Give them a call, and understand that you better stick your landing and make it short, as going around late would be uncomfortable and not cool for the brewery patrons. I fly my 205 in there in the cooler months, but it's been 100+ around here lately. I don't land there hot, heavy, or when the wind is blowing from the South or blowing hard.

McMahon (68WA) is out of the way from Walla Walla, but cool. A ski slope, one way in, other way out strip. Contact the owner on Facebook for permission, but they are really friendly and love airplanes.

Lord Flat, 85 miles east northeast looks really interesting. Read about it here: https://backcountrypilot.org/features/c ... kcountry-2

Re: Walla Walla

Does anyone here know if you’re allowed to land on roads in Walla Walla and nearby counties? I’ve been told it’s not allowed here in Grant County, but is allowed in Douglas county. I’d about swear I saw a crop duster using a road as an airstrip to refill near Clyde, but I didn’t get close enough to know for sure.

There used to be an airstrip on one of our farms along Lyons Ferry road about 20 miles north of Walla Walla, but it stopped being used decades ago and has gone back to crop land. I’d kind of guess that’s the fate of most of the old strips that may have been out there at one time.

There are a couple private strips I’ve driven by about six miles west of Washtucna that may still be active, but I don’t know the owners or how to contact them.
