Happened on Sunday...he got a chip Indicator light about 3 miles from the airport and 1,200 feet on departure and came back around to land. The engine was not making enough power to maintain altitude and puked oil all over the windscreen turning final. They intentionally put it in the water short of the seawall rather then try to clear it as it was questionable that they could do so given their descent rate and lack of power or visibility...hitting the seawall would most likely have been fatal. The canopies were opened prior to impact anticipating the flip and both were able to unbuckle and surface once the aircraft went inverted and stopped. Both Pierre (owner) and Rick (T-28 FAST CFI) escaped with only bruises...the best outcome possible given the scenario.

No time...they intended to make the field until it puked on final. The T-28 is a flying brick without the windmill turning.
