Weed, CA (vagabond blog)

I'm at the cattle terminal at RNO, and picked up a Flying magazine to pass the time. In the table of contents, one photo in particular caught my eye: The magestic Mt. Shasta as shot from Weed airport, with that old 170A out on the ramp. I stopped by there one time to eyeball that plane, it's been there for years, just protecting the concrete from the sun and rain.

I also pulled off the freeway late at night one time at Weed airport during a pretty strong wind/rain event and slept in the cab of my pickup, as I had started to drift off while driving. The wind rocked my truck all night while I snoozed.

I have yet to land Weed with my plane, but when I do I'm going to snap an epic photo of it with Shasta in the background.

Winslow, AZ

About 5 years ago I flew my tired C-140 from Denver to Redlands, CA. Northeastern AZ at night with storms in all quadrants and a 40 kt headwind to boot. Made Winslow AZ around 11:00pm with not much in the tanks and crawled in the back of an old Buick missing a rear pass window. Slept there for the night and was thanking God I was on the ground while I fell asleep to the steady drops of rain.

I too have seen that 170 seating on the ramp many times on my trips to/from Washougal MX and Seattle SX. Believe it or not Z, I've even slept in the rest area N&S bound a few times myself. It would be cool to see that article.

If you fly down to Weed one of these days, let me know. I might try to make it over there too. (If I have gas money).

Re: Weed, CA (vagabond blog)

The wind can be bad a Weed, CA. Took off into the wind one ime and turned right cross wind after about 400 ft. Also one time at 2000 agl with full flaps I got the ground speed down to 6 Kts. Looking for "0". Maybe I need a Sportsman STOL.

The 170 was sold a while back and it is gone.

Speaking of 170's..there is a '49 ragwing 170 at the Pine Bluffs WY airport been siting out there for years. It's tied down out side and every once in a while I see that it has been moved. Maybe 10 years ago or so the guy flew it to SNY. It's my understanding that it has been for sale for a long time.

Re: Weed, CA (vagabond blog)

Did the 170 have a name or just a number. The 172 is the skyhalk and the 182 is the skylane.

Thought I saw an old Cessna add that had a name for it. Think it was the Cessna 170 Shade Maker. :D :D :D

Original 182's were referred as "Your 182 Businessliner" ---------Skylane didn't show up until 1958 with options such as paint and delux interior ,rudder trim
and more radios . I have a 182 Businessliner with improvements ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In the old late 40's/early 50's magazine ads, cessna 190/195's were the "Business Liners". 170's were the "family car of the air"-- kinda the same theme as Stinson "Flying Station Wagon".

Re: Weed, CA (vagabond blog)

I like "Skychicken," but I'll often announce myself as a Skyhawk to ARTCC for operational ease.

I like "roundtail cessna" for pattern ops.

I've been known to use the call sign "58Skylane" when flying with my buddys.
