Weird contraption not subject to aviation law.

A flying car crashes into (not that it matters except for media sensationalism) an elementary school. Transportation Safety Board says "nope, not one of ours", no jurisdiction on something that isn't an airplane. I guess it falls into the "deck chair suspended by fairground helium balloons" category.

Read David Soucie, Why Airplanes Crash. After 17 years as FAA Accident Investigator, he said the first objective was to cover the FAA's butt. The second was to find fault with operator, pilot, or mechanic. The third was to promote safety. His boss would have just hung the mechanic on the 737 that lost its roof in Hawaii. He dug deeper and found that they flew an average 27 minutes per cycle. There was no record of cycles until he came up with it.

Re: Weird contraption not subject to aviation law.

About 20 years ago someone took off from Nampa (MAN) in a part 103 ultralight and died in a crash a few minutes later in a gravel quarry a few miles straight off the end of the runway (Karcher road and 10th avenue south for anyone familiar with the area). The FAA said "it's not an airplane, he doesn't need a license to fly it, it's not our problem". A local TV station interviewed a local "ultralight instructor" who claimed to be an expert on the subject and that he "investigated crashes because the FAA doesn't", he said the engine quit and the pilot hit the fence trying to make a dead stick landing in the gravel quarry. Another TV station interviewed a neighbor who saw the crash, she said she heard a funny noise, and saw him "falling straight down and spinning like a maple seed". Officially there never was a cause for the crash, just sweep up the parts and plan a funeral. I don't want any more government in my life than I already have, but when something falls out of the sky, SOMEONE needs to find out why.
