Whadda ya'll think of this Exp 170B for sale

I ran across this plane for sale and like the looks and details of it. You guys know I don't know little planes. Since I know there are some 170 guys here and others with experience I thought I'd bring this to the floor. Any draw backs to getting a C170 with an experimental classification with a Turbo engine? It would be great in Colorado......... Is the price out of sight? What say you? :P

Just when I'm ready to pull the trigger on buying my own plane, life gets in the way. Well to hell with that!

Experimental exabition pretty much limits you where and when you go, I think. My buddy just bought a super chipmunk with that restriction and he has to send a list to the FAA of the dates and locations that he plans to fly it for the next year.

That would eliminate, going for the $100 burger, or to the BCP Johnson Creek camping trip.

Patrol Guy is right, Experimental/Exhibition is VERY restrictive. Essentially, the only way you can fly one is to/from airshows where you are going to display or fly the plane, and for proficiency. The proficiency thing probably gets abused, but Uncle is always going to be watching.

Any price is too high in this case in my opinion.

Wow. Pretty nifty airplane if the airframe isn't a corrosion bucket. Way too much avionics though, in my opinion (although I could have used them trying to get out of CRQ a couple weeks ago!)

This is unconfirmed, but I heard through my FAA contacts that the experimental/exhibition flight restrictions were being eliminated. It may mean reapplying for the airplane's experimental certification to acquire a certificate without the restriction, but would be worth checking out. If the rumor I heard is true, then the price is right... if the corrosion factor is low!

You can't convert an aircraft into any useful experimental category from Exp/Exhibition. The only others even vaguely practical are Exp/Flight Test and Exp/Amateur built. You can't go to Amateur built, cause you didn't build it.

You MIGHT be able to apply for a standard airworthiness certificate, but all those mods would then have to be approved as well. Generally, to put an airplane back into a standard category a/w certificate, you have to document that EVERYTHING done to it is either within compliance with the TCDS, or covered by a valid STC, which you have authority to use.

Good luck.

...So, hangar queen, or does the current owner actually go through all this hassle to fly it? Any idea how it is getting used now?
