What do I do? FAA turning a new leaf???

Ok - Self inflicted wound here - I did not get my registration paperwork to the FAA in time and now the registration is expired - I sent the paperwork in about 6 weeks ago. When I checked the website, the are currently processing early January. So it will probably be another 4.5 months before they get to mine. UGH.

Anyone know if I can get some sort of temporary registration and/or what would be the quickest way to fix this? I need to move the airplane to my new hangar.

Please let me know if you have any thoughts!

Jim

Re: What do I do?

This may sound crazy... But I would call them. I had similar questions regarding a new registration that I have yet to receive from them. They were extraordinarily helpful on the phone. For new registrations they issue a letter of extension. No idea about existing ones.

The phone number can be found here (be prepared to wait an hour):

Re: What do I do?

Yep, call them. They’ll do an extension via phone and they offered to email me one so I would have to wait while the snail mail was on the way. However, I had to do it twice because the first one never came (email or snail mail). After the second attempt I got the snail mail one, but the email never came. Fortunately, mine hadn’t expired yet so I was good to go.

There've been delays like this with Transport Canada also. We get 90 days grace on the sale of an airplane. I’ve suggested selling the airplane to a friend or family member and buying it back to rest the 90 days. Figures don’t lie, but liars can figure.

Just call. The people that answer are just like you and me. They know the system is jacked up and will help you out. DENNY

I can only imagine the tax implications of doing that.

No tax implications for us in Canada. Private sales of used vehicle or used anything for that matter thar are personal purchases we don't pay taxes.

Re: What do I do?

I suggest calling OKC at 0605 am. The employees get to work at 0600 am and will answer the phone, call later and it seems you will never get thru. I have advised many friends here in California to get up at 0400 am to make these calls and have been successful. Denny's post is correct.

Re: What do I do? FAA turning a new leaf?

Thanks for your advice guys...FAA was super helpful and got me the registration the day after my phone call. It would have been the same day had I not filled out the form wrong.

Had an interesting conversation with the FSDO - He indicated they are changing their mission to be more customer centric. I jokingly made the comment that until we weren't happy, they wouldn't be happy. He laughed and gave me his direct line if I had any issues in the future.

Long and short of it is I screwed up and they went above and beyond to help me.

Cheers to the FAA...

Re: What do I do? FAA turning a new leaf???

I have dealt with GADO in the past and found it depended on the GADO and on the department in the GADO. With FSDO I have had less contact, but also depended on department in KC FSDO. I can't remember if my one hour Air Taxi check ride and certification with their secretary filling out the paperwork from my messed up paperwork was GADO or FSDO in 80. That was the same KC office that would not send me a pink slip so I could go ahead and take an actual CFI ride before leaving for a teaching job in NM. I ended up taking the test only once in Scottsdale. At that time, 1974, no one avoided a pink on the first ride at KC GADO.

Glad it worked out. For several years the FAA specifically FSDO's have leaned into educating verses using a hammer. It does depend on individuals and in every office there are difficult folks.

As a side note: FSDO field approvals are still being done, but the challenge is finding the right guy in the right office who will sign off, which is usually an older employee. They have been for the past several years retiring rapidly and the new guys are not as comfortable signing off those approvals.

Not in Saskatchewan you pay 6% on used and if you by it from a dealer you pay another 5% gst

That won’t work because you need the registration transfer card that they send you during the registration process. My 150-150 went past the 90 days because I didn’t send in the bill of sale. If their missing something they won’t call or email you so call them to see if they have everything they need after it’s sent in. Call and be nice and they will getter done at least they did before Covid.

Glad they worked out well for you. I'm still dealing with them 9 months after purchase.

Previous owner had the airplane registered to a Trust with his wife. However, for the last 6 years, the wife had been incapacitated. They had a POA signed prior to her incapacitation, the POA was of an "indefinite length", stated on the POA. The FAA would not accept the POA as it needed to have been signed within the last 2 years. As she could no longer sign for a new POA, a new one wasn't an option. So, the owner/husband was going to have to acquire court "custody" over the wife. With courts being backed up and lawyers being slow, it was an uphill battle. Unfortunately, his wife passed a couple of months ago, so all that was useless. The FAA mentioned that they'd accept the death certificate in lieu. So, I sent that in a month ago, will be another couple of months until the FAA gets around to opening it.
