For the same reason you point out, though, I invested in a used sat-phone (only paid $60 for it), and I have a pay-as-you-go plan where I don't pay any monthly fee. Two way comm can make a big difference, under the right circumstances.

I now own all this crap cuz I didn't have it previously when I might coulda used it... #-o

I am interested in this type of plan, who is it through? I have a sat phone and only pay for minutes used but do have to pay a monthly fee of 24.95 plus tax. Is there a cheaper way to have a sat phone and only use it several times a year.

Ranch Pilot, I would be interested in more information on your sat plan also.

I don't think the iridium satellite offers that same type of pay as you go with no monthly fee. I checked a while back and found that the 24.95 per month was the cheapest way to go an still have it when you needed it.

But if someone else knows better I would sure like to hear about it.

Ranchpilot I have had the same plan as you for about the same amount of time. I received a call from Globalstar today and they dropped that plan. Offered me 2 months free if I would stay with them.

Globalstar/Spot don't work well in this area anyway, would love to have that option with Iridium. Thanks.

For sat.phone users in Canada & Alaska, Iridium has a plan called "Canada/Alaska" (tsk) that is $190. for 6 months & INCLUDES 200 mins. Time rolls over if/when you renew. Only works in Can & Ak tho.
Globalstar connection is very spotty. We had that in the ambulance but changed to Iridium. It works everywhere.
