I'm itching for more floaty flying and have been toying with the idea of finding partners for a cheap two place float plane. I was thinking something that is relatively inexpensive to operate, 4 to 8 gph. I've looked at some cubs and citabrias but what would you guys recommend? I'm not looking for anything too nice, just something for vfr float fun and time building.

I'm not sure what you're really after, but I hear the Stinson makes a pretty solid 2 seat float plane with baggage room. It might be a little higher operating costs than you are looking for though.

Divide your $50K up into two piles on your kitchen table.

Spend the $25 to 30K pile on an 85 or 100HP Taylorcraft on floats. You will fly on 6 gallons an hour of car gas (if you need to), have decent performance, low maintenance, low operating costs, low insurance costs, and a huge amount of fun per dollar.

You will have the $20K pile of money left over. Use this to fill the gas tank and go fly for hundreds and hundreds of hours.

A Champ or Taylorcraft on floats is possible for that amount of money, and they can be a lot of fun. Don't plan on real long trips, but hey, there's more fun flying floats than almost any other type of flying in my opinion.

You'll probably find insurance prices increase substantially when you put the plane on floats, so check with an insurer before jumping in there.

Just a note, to the best of my knowlage, there is no where on straight floats to get fuel, south of twitchels in turner Maine. Lots of people running anfibs around here. Also keep in mind maintenance when on floats.

where there is a will there is a way. That's why I need low fuel burn, so I can carry all my fuel in the back of my truck.

My vote would be the champ. Extra bonus would be to put it on skis in the winter.

I'm going to get my SES later this summer it looks like and I blame you for planting the idea in my head. All those times you talked about it and the video. I can't wait to fly on floats!

When I bought the Super Cub from CC a few years ago, we played on the river, not very far from where you are at. Remember, water, wheels up.

Plenty of nice Champs on floats out there. Terribly cheap flying and lotsa fun.
Has no flap handle, in case you're short armed...

I got my SES rating in a 7GCBC and it was a kick to fly. Have no idea what they would cost, but way fun ac on floats.
