Ha, Heavy Equipment Operator since 1977 - Dozers, loaders, excavators, backhoes, rock drills, anything with 10 to 34 wheels. Spent 11 hours yesterday in the 14G moving snow, spent 12 hours today in a snowplow doing the same thing. However my main job is a number cruncher for a county road department. You know the weather is bad when the office guy is out in equipment. Yes! I am sick of the snow! :x Plow all day and come home and dig out the yard and house for another 3 hours. At least I can drink a beer while I do that though. :P Headed for the sack now as 4:00 am comes earlier as I get older.

See ya, Bub

My equipment : 656000 TOW
14 steel belted radial tires
Fuel capacity 302,900lbs or 45,208 gallons
Max T/O thrust 200,000 lbs
Average fuel burn 2500 gal per hour

I like my 7gal per hour bird better! :D You would have plenty of work here in McCall. Snow every day. Last night around a foot. The airport looks like Ice Station Zebra!

"Certainty of death, small chance of success, what are we waiting for!"

Traded a 20+year career as a contractor to be a "sky whore" en route to an Ag seat. Determined and on a mission I managed to fast track myself into my current job flying a -34/500gal Thrush at nights. I still "whore out" to the banner guys, the glider guys, and the ferry guys in the day on occasion, so I'm not really sure which qualifies as my "day job". No doubts which pays the bills though!

Take cafe, Rob
shameless plug, hope it doesn't get me banned

I live in Vale, OR. I am a retired teacher, coach. I have an airplane and love to fly, but with the rising costs of fuel, insurance, and everything else, flying is becoming harder and harder. My father was an electrician and we moved to Vale from Sherman N.Y. in 1946. I love to hunt, Fly, and enjoy this part of the country. I am only about 40 minutes from the back country of Idaho. Some of the greatest flying in the lower 48. I think there is a lot of work in your field in the Boise, ID. area. Check out skybobbs gallery for some pictures of landing at Big creek, ID. Or check out a video here www.youtube.com/skybobb search Big Creek a landing-- There is an old saying:" Even a turtle gets nowhere until he sticks his neck out." Bob

hi all,
what is this day job thing? i work at night for fedex as the ac parts man here in anchorage. it is a retirement job that i hope to end in the next couple of years. i spent 22 years in the army and army guard fling helicopters and running ac maintenance units among other things. i have been extermely fortunate to spend the last 38 years here in alaska. most of my private flying has been done in a maule on floats to take in all the hunting and fishing that is available here. the flying here is beautiful and sometimes more interesting than you bargain for but i enjoy it emensly. if any of you get up this way i would be glad to show you around.

i have flown helicoters & maules in ak for 37 years. i have an m6 and m4. most flying is on floats.

Retired Army NCO working as a defense contractor at Ft Sill, OK. Single, no kids except my 172 (which was built while I was in basic training). Last job had me traveling instead of flying, so I changed jobs.

Turning my 172 into an Oklahoma back woods airplane (8.50 x 6 tires all around, Sportsman STOL being put on this month, 180 hp planned for next year) and enjoying several grass strips, progressively getting into smaller ones as the experience level goes up.

You guys seem like a good group to hang out with.

Thanks for the ideas, encouragement, and advice. Had no idea about the jobs outlook. Especially in some of the more remote areas.

All of it helped and sunk in a bit more as to what I have to do. Future looks brighter today.

I think this bit of info summed it all up for me:
There is an old saying:" Even a turtle gets nowhere until he sticks his neck out."

Man that hit home.

You guys are alright. Thanks again.

I still get back to Stormville NY to see my oldest son as he has settled there with his wife and 2 girls. He's a detective in the NYPD, and he can't wait to retire and get out of NY either. Hang in there and when you finally make up your mind to go for it don't look back.

We have a really great bunch here. Iceman/ Butch

Carmel and Stormville are even closer to me than you think. My PO is Wappingers but really I am in Hopewell Jct. Have a few friends in Stormville. (Stormville Mountain Road area.) I also coach my sons in youth football for the town's team "The Packers".

It's a small world.

Well that is heavy for sure.

I get enough snow removel here
I know McCall catchs more than it's share. In 1983 I was working in the Cascades and running several different snow removal machines. We had 223 inches of roadside snow at the time. I worked 43 - 12 hour night shifts straight, without a night off. Don't miss it a bit. 2 years 3 months and I'll be looking for a flying job, don't really care what it is, banner, line patrol, fire spotting, flight instructing. Just as long as I'm not paying to do it.

I grew up back in N.Y. though. Across the river from you, near Kobelt in Wallkill. I was a line boy at Richmor Aviation at Dutchess County Airport when I was 17. That's where I got my private ticket. Also used to fly into Styles a bit up on the hill. My dad used to fly seaplanes out of New Hamburg in the 70's as well.
I miss the trees and fall colors, I don't miss all of the people. Tell it I said hi though. My parents are still there.

I fly out of Dutchess Co. (POU).
I sometimes practice landings over at Kobelt. Nice and quiet there.
Styles is right up the road from me (Sky Acres - 44N) and I eat breakfast there most weekends. I really like that place (despite almost hitting deer there on the runway on my second day flying solo).

I manage to work 4 jobs one full time and 3 on a part part time basis and still have no money to buy a plane haha...I fly around still in a PC12 which amounts to flight time but no real money. I work for a flight department which has a G4 which amounts to money but no flight time, I work as a CFI at a flight school in NH which amounts to flight time but no money and I work full time at an FBO outside of boston which amounts to no flying and no money.....life could be worse hahah.

cooler door

Howdy PG,

I sent sent a PM to you but here is your answers in case you dent get the PM

I do push it open and pull shut. I rigged it up with a "T" style control so I can set it where I want and the air doesn't push it open. No springs. Mounted on bottom side of panel clear of legs obstructions, etc.

Works great!

Patrol Guy - At the bottom of every post by a user, there is a "PM" button. Click it and it takes you into a "compose email" kind of page. Add subject, message, and click send.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Hi all, my 2 cents,
made my mind up to fly for a living and resolved myself to fly anything , anywhere to build time and the next job had to be on bigger equipment, because the money is better and schedules are better on big airplanes. Then you can own a small airplane and have time off to fly anywhere you want. Also you can live anwhere when you can jumpseat to work. You already have an importain thing , a way to earn a living during periods between flying jobs. Best of luck

Ok JC, My ex lived on Stormville Mt road when I met her. Her parents lived there. Her maiden name was Mallon, Barbara. My son lives about a mile from there now. on Blueberry lane just off Rt 52 by the asphalt plant. I bet if we started naming names we'd know the same people. Yes it is a small world!!! :D Way back when, My parents had a summer house in Mahopac and I got introduced to hunting and fishing then. I was born and raised in NYC in Manhattan so you can see why I fell in love with fly fishing and hunting. I'm coming back for a visit in April to see the grand daughters and visit an old friend who lives in Rhinebeck and maybe play a little golf with my son. Besides his PD job he moonlights as a semi pro at the golf course at James Baird SP. He runs the driving range and of course golfs for free, which is why he has progressed to a 2 handicap. Good to talk to an old Homeboy. If there's anything I can help you with and if you ever get out here to SD give me a call and I'll keep you out of the tourist traps, and show you the REALLY good mexican restaurants. Butch/ Iceman
