The HD-X gear is forward at the axle but that won't make the cg change more aft on paper but you will feel it in the yoke on the ground a bit, nothing like the Cub forward gear is though. the 3.5# at the farthest aft point will effect the cg #'s Especially on the 180hp because it is more so aft cg than the 235. When I had the 180 I ran all my survival gear (about 40#) full up to the back of the front seat and the cg was not so troublesome but if I ran it all the way back against the rear bulkhead the cg was very noticeable and handling was very different. Now I run all my gear as far back as I can get it to HELP with the cg and feel.

Hmm, maybe upgrading to a three-bladed prob makes sense on a 180 hp model for CG reasons if nothing else?
I do wonder, though, if the CG is so far aft, or goes there so easily, on the 180 hp model, why isn't the motor mount longer to compensate?

if the 3 blade is lighter I would not do it.... ok I would but I would try to loose the wt in the rear some how to make up. The battery is on the firewall and the mount is farther forward on the 4cyl same cowl as the 6 other wise the nose would be shorter. We thought of doing a smaller batt but the thought was soon passed on due to the cg figures. We even hung a 8244 1A200 prop on that was heaver and that helped as well. Granted the only wt you ever want to add to the a/c better be helpfull performance wise or you are just back tracking of you are looking to get better performance. Now if you are looking for IFR bird and add the wt in instrumentation then that is the tools required to do the job and needed, it all depends on the mission.

How far forward can you get the empty CG? You guys with a 235 maule, what is your empty CG?
From the empty weights listed on maulepilots it looks like 1400# empty is doable with a M6-180 but to fully load it the way I think I'll want the empty CG has to be ~11.75, 11.5 would be better. Problem with that far forward CG is when loaded light for local flying I'd be over 1750# but forward of 15.9 which is not within the limits.
How does the Maule handle with an aft CG? With the numbers I'm playing with I'd be ~20.4 at 2500#
Using the numbers a couple people have sent me for their Maules I couldn't even come close to loading the plane the way I want.
Wish someone made a belly pod for the Maule.

Whee-
With the heavy aft cg you go from 50-55 to 65 and up or you really drag your tail

Belly pod for the Maule..... Hmmm who woulda thunk...
Maybe some day soon....

I seem to remember reading somewhere that the 3-blade MT is two pounds heavier than the stock 2-blade Hartzell and quite a bit lighter than a 3-blade Hartzell, but damn if I can find it again. I suppose that one solution to a CG drifting aft would be to opt for the heaviest prop you can find.

Ok all you Maule experts. Got a question for you. What years were the M5 and M6 produced? Were they still making the M5 in 1988 or would that be an M6?
Thanks
David
