Re: Where did you fly today?

Some days of flying are just better than others. Today was one for the books.
This is how the day started and it got even better. Man I love the fall weather.

Re: Where did you fly today?

My wife and I flew up to Sierraville, nice little spot just north of Truckee, and indulged for 24 hours at the hot springs. Nice spot. Good soak, good food, lodge built in 1870. half mile walk from the airport, O79.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Nice work Pete! Your at the start of the north circuit! Lots of ranches in that area. Currently in mexico surfing and spending time with the wife.

Thinking about a fly in here in about 2-3 weeks.

The reservoirs just to the north are in prime shape with all the water release.

One of my favorite little strips-- that Stinson looks great sitting there. Enjoy it while you can-- in a few months, you might need floats to land there. #-o

Re: Where did you fly today?

We flew to Shelter Cove last night and stayed the night at the Lost Coast Inn which is a short walk from the north end of the runway.

The hotel is on the bottom left in this picture

Tieton got to come too since the hotel is pet friendly

Not a bad view from our room

Re: Where did you fly today?

I think there must be about 11 Shelter Coves and Stillwater Coves along any stretch of coastline in the English speaking world. Is that one over by Fort Ross?? Sea Ranch?? It really looks like a nice spot. I wonder how long it will take to put hotels on that runway?

Shelter Cove in Northern California. I'm not sure where Fort Ross or Sea Ranch are at, I'm not from these parts.

I found it. Shelter Cove is at 40*N and 124*W while Sea Ranch (near the town of Fort Ross) is at 38*60' N and 123:60W. Down the coast a bit.

My wife was looking over my shoulder at the photo of the strip. I'm in trouble.

Here are some pictures with a beautiful view from the rim of the mountains looking down at the town of Huntington Utah and surrounding areas enroute to the Huntington Utah's UBCP fly-in yesterday. Also a picture of Wally at the fly-in with the Yellowhawk.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Did some slow flight and stall work today and hit a few of the strips on the North circuit today. Went looking for Gump at Sierraville (Deerwater) and found his plane....
Image

Left and went on my way and ran into "GregA" (one of our members here) on the radio. He was in his Rans with a couple other buddies. I was actually flying into Totem Pole when I heard them talking. He asked if I was on the BCP site and the rest is self explanatory. Asked them what there plan was and we ended up back at Sierraville looking for Gump. This was about an hour or so after I was there the first time. We waited and talked BS thinking Gump would return soon but, after an hour of BS no Gump and we departed. Landed a two of the reservoirs on the way home.

Was a good day...

Re: Where did you fly today?

We were having breakfast when I heard you fly over. Told Reno Chick, "That has to be Kevin." Sounds healthy. Then we saw the Rans come stringing in.

Sorry we missed ya. We were on a mission to Calpine, and spent the day there. Found the patch and card though. Thanks!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Another one of those perfect fall days. Took the wife out to see the colors. She is really getting comfortable with taking the controls for a while. Guess it's time for her to work on her ticket.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Last weekend I rode up a canyon I had had my eye on for some time. The landing was in brush and at 7500'. I tied up the plane real good to an old corral and got the folding mountain bike out and started pedaling. I made it some 6.2 miles up the canyon (I bought a small, light, cheap, and simple GPS just for these type of trips, all it does is tell you how far and what direction to get back to your campsite) and was just starting think of heading back. I was thinking that it was 6.2 miles in a straight line, so I had actually gone much further due to the trail turns and twists. 20% further. Also, using the formula of 1% degradation in performance for every thousand feet, and since I was at 9K, an addtional 9% . Then the loss in performance and increase in difficulty of not being 25 anymore, adding this all up I figured it was a 20 mile one way ride

While thinking these deep thoughts, all in an effort to justify turning back to the cold beer, I mean campsite, I saw the trail once again forded the stream. This would be the 4 th. time I'd get wet up to my knees, boots on, so I passed on the main trail and decided a little further on a steep single track would be far enough. It ran along the stream, and was too steep and narrow for the bike, so I hoofed it another 1/2 mile and then I noticed a strange musky odor, skunk was my first thought, but different somehow. I kept going and 20' on I couldn't help but notice a large (dinner plate dia.) fresh pile of crap. Huge frigging skunk I thought. Slowly, my city bred mind processed this information, while I took another few steps forward. Then I got a funny feeling and stopped and listened carefully, it was quiet, too quiet, finally realizing I may have intruded into dangerous territory I reached for my pen and my to do list for the next time I'm in town,, and wrote BUY BEAR SPRAY, and turned around and started back. If you can't be smart, or armed, be lucky!

I blasted off the next morning, and a little over an hour later I was home, with another little mini adventure (real live danger but handily close to home, so at least convinent) for the log book. Yeah, my flight log is peppered with much more info then where, when and how long... this flight entry got the coveted star symbol, meaning something real fun or real scarey, or both. Great scenary though! 12K+ peaks shown.Image
