Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Last chance to fly my favorite Stinson over to Scappoose Oregon to get gas for the last time and now in the morning it's heading south to Sacramento to a new lifeImage

It's sad to see it go... Maybe I'll get to see it sometime down here in CA.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Cowdog and I went to help out a rancher in the neighboring town of Eureka, 80 miles to the south.

Image

Turns out the sheep herders he had working for him quit in the 30 below weather we had a while back. They left behind 700 sheep with no one to watch them and the sheep wandered off somewhere in the allotment. How hard can 700 sheep be to spot from the air, we thought? He didn't tell us until we were over the last known camp that the allotments cover 237,000 acres  and there is still a lot of snow on the ground #-o !

Image

Amazingly enough after about 2 hours in the air we spotted about 150 escapees at 9,500 on the side of a mountain in lots of snow ( I didn't think at the time to take a picture of them). After that we stopped for a comfort break.

Next time, we know what questions to ask first. They were pretty happy that we found the ones we did and are rounding up a posse to capture them tomorrow. We wished them luck and wondered how in the heck they'd get up there on horseback =D>. That should be quite the adventure...

Re: Where did you fly today?

Rich, what's 100LL at Scappoose going for these days? That used to be the chepaest place around. FWIW we're at $6.25 at Jefferson County, and about $3.75 for e-zero 87 mogas nearby.

Re: Where did you fly today?

My boy and I flew up to Logan on Saturday to see my brother's family and give them some airplane rides. They paid us in milkshakes. We sure enjoyed them on the way home!

And NO, we did not get them at the "fly-thru"... :D

Cool. Did you experience any of the so-called "Cache Valley Carb Ice?"

Re: Where did you fly today?

Haha! No Cache Valley Carb Ice but we did have to navigate in and out that zoo of an airport 6 times to pick up each passenger. Nothing like dealing with 5 planes and a helicopter constantly in the pattern, with those students using a five mile final and landing halfway down a 10K ft runway. We spent more time waiting to takeoff than flying.

Maybe I just needed to be less courteous. Never had that problem before. :D

It can get crazy with the helicopter school and leading edge going at the same time. I love watching the students use all of the runway in a 152 :D

I gotta say, Caldwell has Silverhawk Aviation (Helicopter Training) and even with as much as 4 helicopters and 4 airplanes in the pattern at the same time, it always seemed to work out just fine. The biggest key was that the Helicopters used the south side of the pattern while the fixed wing used the north side. Even taxing around was a non-issue. We all just seem to make it work just fine by communicating well with each other (at least that was my experience).

Utah's most dangerous flying???? Not the high mountains...not the tight canyons..

The most dangerous flying in Utah is the 2nd Saturday morning of every month at LGU-

Thanks, you're right. Jeff is a great guy. Pretty tough to get him upset and he has a way of pointing out mistakes that is productive rather than belittling. He loves to fly and instructing seems fun to him. When I get this tailwheel thing figured out I plan on doing some upset training with him as well.

Re: Where did you fly today?

It was windy here today 16 gusting to 21 and almost straight down the runway so I went around the pattern a few times. It made for some short takeoffs and landings!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Cool vid Rob. It's neat how you could see the wind give up just before touchdown as evidenced by the GS increase. maybe I need my eyes checked but thats how it looks.

The wind was definitely stronger higher up.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Went up for about 45 minutes today. Did some tight turns, spiraling decents, and stalls just because I haven't been up for over a month. When I was setting up for a power off stall into the wind I noticed my ground speed was getting pretty slow so I just pulled the power back, slowed it down and with no flaps I was doing 25mph ground speed at 7,200ft MSL, 3,00ft AGL with the stall horn barely going off. Slowest I've ever flown this plane! (I know if I had been in the Cub I would have been flying backwards :D ).

The faster I go , the farther behind I get.

Re: Where did you fly today?

It was one of those days where we just needed to leave town for a while so Maverick and I loaded up the spouses and headed for Twin Falls Idaho, 130 miles northeast.
