Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

A 182 with two people on board crashes on takoff. They had to cut one guy out. The other managed to get out. The guy they cut out is in critical condition.

So we sat around all day with the airport closed. We were the only transient aircraft. Late afternoon the FAA guy asks how far away is our home airport. We tell him about 35 minutes and the sun sets at 4:35 pm and the airport doesn't have lights. At 3:40 he says if we can use half the runway, then he'll let us go even though the airport is still closed. Bang! We are out of there! Made it home as the sun hit the horizon.

I fly a spam can now and that picture scares the hell out of me, I doubt tube and fabric would look like that?

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew the Willamette Valley this morning. Stopped at a buddies work site and landed in a grass field nearby that has a slope about like Mile Hi. Great practice. Then went to Lebanon (S30) to get some nameplate data for a couple of guys interested in the old Aero Commander rotting there. Here's a picture through the wind shield.

Where did you fly today?

Hee Haa Tom!

I'm sure you are well aware of it (unless the bees were looking under the radar), but you were hopping a Chamberlain 2001K nose radome... interesting enough some people claim that not only it does not create drag, but actually allows the airplane to gain a bit of speed... go figure!

Thanks a lot for the help and I'll email you about the other details.

I have a renter in his 70s who has his PPL but has not flown in years. I took him out today, and he loved it. 1 hour around the local area. High overcast gusting 35mph at Troutdale, fun!

Cheers

Took the plane out to dry out after all the rains. Hangar condensation sucks. But a good excuse to go burn some Avgas

Re: Where did you fly today?

Went back east to NJ for Xmas. Christmas eve flew with my Mom from Hackettstown down to Sky Manor for lunch and then over to Van Sant to play on the grass. Really beautiful day with Manhattan on the skyline but it was pretty gusty and crosswinds were sporty at times.

Christmas day took my sister's boyfriend out in the Champ for his first-ever GA flight. Overcast ahead of the storm that later blew in but the air was cold and smooth. Went over to Trinca to bounce on the grass there and then hopped over to Andover-Aeroflex cause that place puts a smile on my face every time I land there, just too perfect.

Made two trips into PDX today to show the Stinson. Backcountry.....is in the eye of the beholder, first time into class C for me....I'll take Idaho anytime.
Flew the 180 both times, hoping the GPS would help the hillbilly factor.

Portland Tower: Fly midfield over tower maintain 2000ft or above.
Hillbilly pilot: over tower 2000ft
Portland Tower: you are to far to the East....over tower means OVER THE TOWER
Hillbilly pilot: I needed a picture :?

Hillbilly big shot on 120mph final while Alaska Air holds short :D

Parked at Flightcraft with the rich.

Following the river home.

Big day for me....almost pussed out on PDX.

I'm with you Terry...towered airports give me the creeps! I do so every once in a while just so I don't forget how to talk to the fat lady in the tower.

Hey Vick, you are in my backyard! My brother keeps his sailplane at VanSant. Sure is a pretty area to fly.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Hey Terry how do you like that 182TD? I remember seeing that on Barnstormers, looks like a really nice plane with some cool mods. I was thinking about buying it but it was a little out of my price range, and when I thought about the fuel burn I knew my wife would never let me fly the dang thing  I'm happy with my 170 though and its 7.5gph.

I ran into a similar situation at Long Beach, CA (KLGB) a few years ago. Tower was ticked that I didn't pull all the way up to the Hold Short Bar to wait to take the active runway. I stopped about 20 feet back. I looked behind me thinking there's a line of aircraft behind me, but not a single plane. Not sure what the big deal about that. But the instructor that was with me said "Don't worry about that A-Hole! He's always a prick!"

Re: Where did you fly today?

PDX is tough? Try SFO on a clear day when they are doing parallel landings on 28L and R and and the same time doing parallel departures on 1l/R. There is nothing like starting your takeoff roll on 1l and being passed by a 737 rolling down 1R. Then I started flying bizjets, it is more fun being the passer than the pasee.

It's awesome, having a blast with it!
Might as well round it off and call it double your fuel burn.
Running mogas knocks off about 25% of the cost though.
Talked him down to 38. :D
