Where did you fly today?

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Where did you fly today?

I didn't, but two out of three "ain't" bad. Saturday , above, Sunday went to a fly-in that turned out to be a Stinson thing. There were 7. I don't think I have seen that many in one place other then OSH.

Today, after visiting the cemetery, I worked cattle fore 9 hours.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Didn't go anywhere today....worked on Honeydo's....But yesterday (5/30) was nice. Flew from Merrill field to Talkeetna for the First Annual Cliff Hudson Memorial Flyin and Pancake Feed. Wasn't a really large crowd, but some nice folks regardless. The aviation heritage museum support the flyin by breaking out the Grumman Goose and flying to PATK for the festivities. Was a nice day that later turned into a rather hot day. Morning was smooth as glass 23 squared got me 150 indicated all the way with lots of nice country to gander at from 2200 feet. The hot afternoon turned the ride back into a bump mobile in the air....but not too bad. All in all, a good day to fly and find a flyin.

Only bad part of the day was when the chopper brought in two unfortunate folks from Toronto that got into an avalanche on the Ruth Glacier in the McKinley area the day before.....the transfer from the chopper to the medical examiner's van was very discrete and those that weren't pilots had no clue what was going on.

Nice little C150/150TD project that's taking a while.

I saw a finished one at Sidney, Neb. it still had the C150 gear for mains and the fbo there said with that gear and a tall tail spring the angle of attack is so low that it goes way down the runway before it can land. They can't get the nose up without striking the tail wheel. The fix is the 170 main gear and a low spring tail wheel. ( Maybe this is another thread?)

Re: Where did you fly today?

Depends on the gear-- if it's the later tubular gear they're kinda screwed (in more ways than one). If it's the earlier leaf-spring gear, it can be re-arched which makes for narrower stance but higher AOA on the ground. Bush conversion or someone who did t/w conversions in the past offered "gear extensions", which were pretty much like a set of 120/140 "wheel extenders" turned on end to lengthen the gear legs. Ugly but effective.
You can always land t/w first, where the low AOA is the biggest handicap is on takeoff. Adding some flaps to increase the effective AOA wold be a must on a squatty 150TD.
I keep meaning to measure some 170 gear legs to see how they'd work on my airplane, just haven't got around to it yet. There oughta be quite a few sets available out there, since switching to 180 gear legs is such a popular mod for 170's. The soft gear on the early model 170's would be perfect for a 150/150TD.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Damn the luck, I had to work Memorial Day... luckily my work for the day was great fun :D , flying out a much needed roll of direct burial electrical cable and a splicing tool /crimper to the rancher I'm putting in a large solar power system for, about 100 miles away. On the backside of the Big Lost River Range, in the Pahsimeroi Valley, I just like saying those names.

Up till now I've landed by his ranch house, this is at the job site a mile away, a single lane dirt road on his property. I got lucky on the timing as the weather sucked before and after. He's impressed I did it for free, I didn't tell him I would have paid him, we're both happy. The plane, even being experimental and not for hire or profit, is a real usefull tool. It's next task will be doing the aerial photo work ( for free) on a new church being built in the valley below me, which will hopefully lead to me getting all the crane work, if not I'll still enjoy the flying!

Re: Where did you fly today?

This week in Columbus, they have the Memorial Golf Tournament. Today was just a practice day. They reserve this ramp at OSU for all those big beautiful jets the players come in. I want to know, who showed up in the T-Craft?

Patrol Guy,

Based on the picture I would venture that the guys with the best balls came in the biggest jets. Thus, the guy in the little T-Craft .......

Re: Where did you fly today?

First flight om the IFR system on my own, pretty cool to go in clouds and not worry. Flew Durango to Casey, Illinois on my way to see family in Philly. Best kept grass strip I've ever seen in Junction, Kansas. They are getting it nice for a Bi-Plane fly in this weekend. Tomorrow if all goes well, I'll make it to the coast.

Re: Where did you fly today?

Flew to BFF yesterday for our EAA chapter 608 flyin. We flew 49 YE's, had a Huey from FE Warren AFB out of Cheyenne, an an Airlink med chopper, a KC-135 Tanker out of Lincoln NE and an F-16 from Buckley Denver did three low passes for the crowd. Got my ass kicked in the turb back to SNY but it was a good day.

Where did you fly today?

Had the pleasure of meeting Rhyppa today in Cook, MN. He took Erin and me for a great flight up to Crane Lake where we had lunch at Nelson's Lodge, then over to Scotts' seaplane base for a look-see.

Great time, good folks everywhere, and nice flying weather. It was our first floatplane flight and I'm still riding the high 2 hrs later.

Rhyppa's a class act and a solid pilot. Thanks again, man!

Re: Where did you fly today?

Well, I didn't actually fly anywhere today. But went to Stoddards open house/grand opening at Merrill. They have a very nice new facility a few blocks east of their old one.

Open house continues until six or so tonight.

On the way back to the hotel went by 7th and Ingra, folks have left a few tasteful memorial wreaths and flowers at the crash site. Very sad to see the site.
