250 mile loop around Mt. Hood Oregon. Stopped at Madras and went out to the cabin to do some winterizing. Fun Fun Fun! Glassy smooth.

Greased a wheel landing with my 600hr pilot friend. It was his first time with me. He was impressed. I didn't tell him that was a 1 out 20 landing. RB

Crosswind practice

It started out looking like a beatiful morning, but the wind picked up after about 8:00. By 10:00 it was 18 kt gusting to 24. And it was blowing almost directly across the strip.(~80 deg.) Having not done much crosswind practice lately, I decided to go out and give it a try. I've never landed such a tough crosswind, but wasn't too worried, because the grass strip I fly off of is surrounded by a grass field that could be landed on if the need arose.
My first approach ended in a low pass, just dragged a wheel a little bit and tried to keep the plane on the rwy. Gusts made it difficult.
I was suprised how much rudder it took to keep it straight. Very near full deflection.
After a few landings, I was feeling much more comfortable and could consistently get on the ground without too much trouble.
Finished off the morning with some short takeoffs out of the grass field into the wind.
Good way to spend a morning? Hell yeah!!
No, I didn't get to fly into any cool remote backcountry strip, but the experience was exhilarting none the less. Good times.

Well the day was Sunday.. The weather was clearing for the first time in daze... (am I sounding dramatic enuff yet?) anyhoo I was told that Jason was on the way over to finish the annual on 10Y and I had better be ready... Well as I was getting some pratice in (it had been 10 daze since last assent into the blue) who should call "Skywagon 8 miles to the south inbound for Joseph" but a new bright white and red 180 in need of bigger shoes. I anounce that I have traffic in sight and am above him 1000 ft, to which he sayz I need to follow him in and get him some bigger shoes and don't be loly gaging either....

On the ground here at 4S3 I had to hold George off with my new S&W M&P 9 (read http://www.guntrdr.com ) as he tried and tried to get me to take his Credit card, Finally was able to get him to let me put the tires together and ship them to him..

While all this was happenin' Bill A and Jason landed and we were then off to S98 to get the final sign off for 10Y. What a great day to fly after wondering the sky (to busy lookin' outside to keep heading  ) we made it to Tri-cities and after a good look at the airplane we were back in the air and home bound with a 10kt tail wind!!!

What a day!! 8)

Troutdale, Tillamook Air Museum, Siletz Bay S45, and back to Troutdale. The wind at Troutdale was 25G30 Kts It took me about 100' to get airborne.

NO wind at the beach and almost 70 degrees. Soooo nice! Had lunch at the Air Base cafe. The food is excellent.

At Siletz Bay we walked to the beach, about 15 min. Then had coffee. Back to the Maule for the 40 min ride home. What a great day.

Width: 296 feet
Area: Over 7 acres
(enough to play six football games)
Doors: 120 ft. high,

220 ft. wide opening. The sections roll on railroad tracks
Catwalks: 2 catwalks, each 137 ft. above the hangar deck

In 1942, the U.S. Navy began construction of 17 wooden hangars to house the K-class blimps being used for anti-submarine coast patrol and convoy escort. Two of these hangars were built at the Naval Air Station Tilllamook, commissioned in December 1942 to serve the Oregon-Washington coastal area.

Construction of the two hangars was rushed to completion. Hangar "B" was the first one built and was completed in the spring of 1943. Hangar "A" which was destroyed in a 1992 fire, was completed in only 30 days. Amazingly, there were no serious injuries or deaths on the whole project.

Stationed at NAS Tillamook was Squadron ZP-33 with a complement of eight K-ships. The K-ships were 252 feet long and filled with 425,000 cu. ft. of helium. With a range of 2,000 miles and an ability to stay aloft for three days, they were well suited for coast patrol and convoy escort. Naval Air Station Tillamook was decommissioned in 1948.

Since 1994 the remaining hangar has been home to one of the top five privately owned aircraft collections in the nation.

Hey Wup, where's 10Y. Most of us lowlanders don't know these places by identifier numbers. Hard to look them up on a sectional, which is what i usually do just to immagine flying there. (I think that's called hangar flying.) Since I'm down for repairs that's all I can do for now.

ALVORD DESERT!!!!

It was totally cool. First off airport landing! \:D/. Fantastic weather, calm winds at alvord. Starting off through the gorge was interesting with winds gusting to 28.

I'll post a trip report when I have time to write it.

Life is good. Life is better with wings.

Weekend flight

W52 to Bellingham on Friday, back to w52 on Sunday. Beautiful WX, wife took lots of photos of the Puget Sound area. Luck would be on my side, had headwinds both ways. Why does that always work out?

Headwinds allow you to do more of what you like if destination is not important.

I always thought it would be a kick to get a book and have a new cover made for it to pull out just before takeoff with a new passenger in the right seat... Cover would say...."How to Fly an Airplane"

Dropped by Schellville (Sonoma, CA) yesterday to check out airplanes. It's a friendly place, low key with lots of classic airplanes including some Oshkosh champions. It's hard to pick favorites, but I'm partial to the 195s. They're absolutely gorgeous. Here's a link with some pictures. http://www.sfahistory.org/schellville2007.htm

I have not been there in years. What a cool place. One of the few places you can go and fly with out a radio in your vintage ride. I have very cool memories of flying in there with my Dad. We had some good times there checking out all the classics. I have to agree there are some pretty nice 190/195s there.

John

It was like a time warp. There were a couple of Stearmans (Stearmen?) giving rides, a bright yellow cub flying around the pattern with the windows open, guys hanging out in their hangars tinkering etc. And cold Cokes in glass bottles from the vending machine in the biplane rides office.

We parked on the grass and wandered around for a couple of hours.
I did a 360 in the runup area looking for traffic before we took off. There was no traffic in sight or on the radio, so I took off and let the 520 announce our departure (I must be a danger to society). It's a sweet place.

$100 Breakfast

We took off about 8am from the Auburn airport. We were headed to Willows, CA for breakfast at Nancy’s on the airport strip. The flight was extremely smooth, but lots of haze. Most likely smoke coming up from So. Cal after all those fires. Visibility was not all that great. Got on No. Cal approach and flew over Beale AFB. Took the route toward the Sutter Buttes over the Sacramento Wildlife refuge, the Feather River, and the Sacramento Valley. Arrived about 30 minutes later. Had a heavy cross wind on landing. Had ourselves a nice hearty breakfast at Nancy’s—good old homestyle cooking. Nice folks also. We walked around the airport a bit, then headed north towards Lake Almanor. Flew over Chico, then veered over the top of Oroville. We flew over Lake Oroville, the haze getting worse, and the sun giving off a bad glare as you can tell from the pictures. We then took a straight line south towards the Auburn airport, over Nevada City/ Grass Valley. Great flight altogether! Smooth flight-much to the wife’s happiness. Total flight logged: 2 hours 20min. What would have normally taken a day’s worth of driving! Gotta love flying! :D

Pictures in my gallery under "Flying Around." Enjoy!

We are in Oregon. Troutdale to The Dalles. The Dalles is in Oregon but the airport is across the river in Washington. There is a real good restaurant on the field, open 7 days a week 9-5.

Then we headed south to S33 Madras. Took a buddy out to the cabin, he has never seen it. Lots of smoke and haze.

The last leg back to Troutdale was perfectly clear. Coming over the Cascades south of Mt. Hood can only be described as awe inspiring. Words can't do it justice.

The wheel landings were tough with a 200 pounder in the back. I am getting good at converting a botched wheel landings to a 3 pointers.

Logged 1.75 hours Cheers...Rob
