Lunch Run

Flight from EUG to 4S9 (Mulino) for lunch. While we were eating, good food by the way, a beautiful Cub taxied over. I added some 100LL cause it was $4.65/gal, but had some problems making the pump work right, so carry enough fuel to leave if you come to fill up. I recommend the trip regardless and it was a great day to fly. The Mrs. had a great time and she makes my little plane look Ginormous.

Last Thursday I flew all the way from Corvallis to Salem. Wandered around the Collins Foundation war birds and took a few pictures.

Hi All,

I am new to this site, and what a great site. I don’t get to do much out of the way flying living under the Atl class B, but I do get to commute to work. This is my 170 in our hangar at work.

SkyMaule, Love the picture of the farm from the air. Looks like you landed short a couple of times though , must be tough taxiing across a plowed field like that. . good looking Horse too Mark!! By the way if you're moving cows and sittin on a horse I believe you are a cowboy. :-$

We headed out to Moontown for breakfast this past Saturday morning and found ourselves in heaven on earth on the way home. The evening flight was just as nice.

Today fueled at Livingston MT, fuel at Deer Lodge, and on to Polson MT were we will camp overnight. On to Sandpoint in the morning with an overnight stay at Cavenaugh Bay. Hope to be into JC by Thursday or Friday.

My son and I left Washington, Mo. on June 5th, 2008 for the Missouri Breaks. Made it to Columbia, Neb. in 3 hours...clear skies and 20 kt. tailwind.

Headed for first overnight camp in Custer State Park, S. Dakota. got about 100 west of Columbia and ran into massive Thunderstorms....diverted to Ainsworth, Neb. and camped during a windy stormy night.

Next day made it to Custer for a brief stop and over to Custer city airport for fuel. Ran into more thunderstorms and diverted to a grass strip in Richie, Montana. Spent the night camping there. Next day on to Winifred, Montana.....off loaded some gear and flew to Cow Creek airstrip in the Breaks for a glorious day of hiking and camping. Rain came the next morning and so we left a day early....throwing mud up over the wings on the take off. Scudd running back to Winifred. Spent the night in a sleeping room there.....more rain.

Next day off to McCall, Idaho. Got to McCall....off loaded 200 lbs of gear in McAll Aviation's big hanger. Tried to fly to Johnson Creek, Idaho.....couldn't get through the passes. Flew to Memamoose, Oregan....strip was muddy with snow and ice. Returned to a grass strip 20 miles south of McCall near Cascade. Camped overnight. Awoke to sleet and snow....ice on the Maule. Weather cleared and we flew to Johnson Creek. Beautiful day there. Hunted mushrooms and fried them for lunch. Got a blizzard that evening awoke to 6 inches of snow the next day. Spent the day on a 12 mile hike....saw moose with calf, brown bear, deer....cougar and coyote tracks. Spent another night.

Next day the weather cleared. Went to McCall and was shot down for two days getting a boost pump replaced. Drove to Hell's Canyon Park. Hiked to a peak and camped in a lovely site with a 360 view of lower mountians. Got up and drove back to McCall.

Collected the repaired Maule($1,223.00 repair)and flew to Moose Creek, Id. The weather was perfect. We camped overnight and did an 8 mile hike to the observation tower.

Left the next day for Meadow Creek airstrip in Montana. Flew along the Chinese Wall enroute. Had a wonderful "father's day" campout, complete with dinner.....compliments of my son. Roast beef, corn, onions and fried potatoes all cooked together. Combined with a bit of Fat Tire beer and spiced rum. Campfires and "dad/son' talk every night until one a.m.

Next day on to Glacier Natl. Park. Rented a car, toured the park, did an 6 mile hike up to and above Avalance Lake. Motel for the night.

Next day a 11:25 flight from Glacier to Evansville, Ind. Fuel stops in Sturgis S.D and Centerville, Iowa. Dropped the son off in Evansville and returned home to MO6(Wash. Mo.) Total of 12:55 of flight time. Arrived at the house after a 16 hour day. Fell asleep on the couch watching video of the trip

Total flying? 41 hours and nearly 5,000 miles. The Maule hauled a half ton of cargo, fuel and human flesh with grace. Well she climbed slow but.......

Can't wait to do it again and again.

Living the Dream

Yesterday, while getting the dual required by the insurance co for my 182, I flew from Merrill (PAMR) in Anchorage to Talkeetna (PATK) for touch and goes. While in the pattern at Talkeetna, watched Rust Flying Service take to the air in 3 turbine Otters and a 185 taking touristas up to the glaciers on Mount McKinley. After a few bounces, I went back to Willow (PAAQ) for a touch and go on the gravel strip, then flew around the head of Cook Inlet and back to Anchorage near the mountains. Had to kill time due to a TFR at Merrill b/c of the Thunderbirds arrival at Elmendorf AFB for this weekend's airshow, then back to Merrill. It was fun and a good time was had by all.

Went up on midnight of solstice to see how high I'd have to climb to see the sun at solar midnight (=2:00 AM). We're at 63.5 degrees north, so about 3 degrees south of the arctic circle. I had sun above the horizon from 5,500 MSL, but it turns out that atmospheric bending of the light is the big variable. It's not really a true test of where you line up with the sun above the curvature of the earth. Anyway, it was a fun time.

Well that is a pretty cool idea! Never crossed my mind to think you could see the sun at night at altitude from an airplane. Although it makes perfect sense!

I had a friend who would take girls on dates in his 172 and after watching the sun set over the marsh of south Ga he would say how beautiful it was and when the girl agreed he ask if they wanted to see it again and then climb up in time to see the sun dip below the horizon once more. He called it “Date package #7”

Flew the Stearman from Camarillo, Ca to Santa Ynez, Ca (gas 5.12) on Sat. Great day up there with quite a few people taking gliders up. Today, flew it from Camarillo to Ramona, Ca (gas 5.95) with a quick stop in Chino (gas 4.80 SS / 4.90 truck). Pretty cool watching a SWA 737 landing at Burbank below me from the open cockpit!! Got to Ramona, then gave a couple of friends some rides. Tookk one up to fly over Harrah's Rincon and got "jumped" by a red/white Super cub! Okay, more like over taken.....I had all the squirrels moving and couldn't pull away....gotta love it! If it was anyone on this site.....your SC looks great!

Lotsa fun!!! 8)

Flew over to Troutdale (TTD) for a few touch and go's before heading down to Eagles Nest grass strip. Unfortunately the fellow I was going to meet was out hiking in the gorge but I got a chance to shake hands with his hunting buddy.

Then back up to Camas (1W1) to refuel. One of my better landings at Camas, okay with a slight tailwind. I look over at an open hanger with a couple of pilots sitting enjoying the view. As I taxi by, one of them flashes a big card with a 4 on it.

Four :!: Only a four!?! Geeze! Tough crowd.
