Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

I been lookin on line, but haven't found anything. Is there a book with the test questions and answers for the FAA written test for commercial ticket, and instrument ticket that I can get somewhere, or a link where I can get them and print them out?
Thanks Gary

Re: Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

Way back in the day, (the last time I took an FAA written was probably 1982), the FAA questions were available from the Acme Test Guide Company (yep, that was the real name). Back in those days, the FAA didn't disclose the questions and answers, but Acme pretty much nailed them. I understand they used to pay test takers to remember questions and answers and send them in. I believe that in more recent years, the FAA actually started publishing the questions and answers in response to a Freedom of Information Act judgement. If true, I suspect it pretty much put Acme out of business.

Re: Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

There are several out fits offering sample tests. I can't imgine that someone hasn't compiled the questions and answers for folks to study.

I was thinkin that when I took my privte back in the 80's, I had a book w/the questions and answers to study from. Maybe not?????

But, assuming that I remember right( and that's a long shot  ), I would have thought the same was available for the other tests.

I think the Gleim books have the questions and answers in them.

Weird your having trouble Gary-

Just logged in and then took a test. Have not tried to print it out but you can take sections of the test or the whole deal as many times as you like. All of the questions come with the answers etc., once you hit the correct your test link. It then gives you all of the correct answers. It even keeps score for you so you can work on the weak areas.

You may have already done this but Jeppesen and Gliem give you the book with the questions and answers. I went through the book with a highlighter and marked every correct answer and then only read the question and correct answer until I was good.

Feel free to PM me if you like and I can walk you through the site.

Re: Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

Unfortunately the FAA has recently started to re work their test banks starting with their FOI, CFI and IFR knowledge tests. At the same time they've also stopped releasing the questions and answers like they have done in the past so all the available study guides are only going to get you mostly prepared but you will still find new subjects. The latest IFR written has questions about icing and autopilot operations for example.

If it had a blue cover, it was an Acme Test Guide. They had them for all ratings.

Are you looking for something like this? This is ASA's test prep for the Instrument Rating.

http://www.asa2fly.com/Test-Prep-2011-S ... duct1.aspx

I used the software from http://www.checkride.com/ for my Instrument as well as my Commercial License here recently. They give you test prep for both the written and the oral test. So far I've just used the written prep, still thinking about getting the oral prep for my CPL. Couple more ideas for you.

Have you had any direct experiences with the FAA that gave you this impression? I know all the sayings and jokes but I've yet to experience it. It might just be me, but they have always been really great to deal with and nothing but personable, reasonable folks as long as you understand they are working for a government agency and have a lot of bureaucracy to deal with.

I'm in the reserves with an FAA inspector. He's even told me not carry my log book with me. And don't give them a inch more info than they require. Hmm I wonder why he'd say this.

Re: Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

Why would you carry your logbook with you or give them any extra leverage during a ramp check? I've been ramped a few times (seem to have a knack for it or something) and each time it's been easy peasy.

An inspector friend of mine was a Catalina a few years ago ramping pilots. He found 18 people without proper personal documentation. I was able to verify each and every one of them, give them a bit of a warning and send them along their way. No action taken against them. I get the impression you've really got to screw up bad to get them pissed at you.

Oh I believe they are professional and courteous but I get the feeling they have quotas. The inspector I work with hasn't outright said it but hinted. Quotes create the cat and mouse game. IMHO it is pretty sad when you "shouldn't" carry your log book with you. There should be some understanding. Nobody's perfect and with all those entries something is going to be amiss. And what of the student pilot working on advanced ratings with hundreds of entries that need to carry his. Like you said one more thing the FAA can nail you on. Sad

Re: Where's the source for FAA test Q&A's

The FAA written test questions haven't changed substantially for decades. Many years ago, one of the training outfits filed a FOIA request with the FAA to release the test questions and answers. The FAA responded by releasing the test questions.

Frankly, that is probably one of the worst things they've ever done. Ever since, a significant industry has developed, aimed at teaching people the tests.

The FAA, as noted, is now in the process of changing the test questions, to more accurately reflect the current status of aviation. Hopefully, there won't be any more questions regarding interpretation of printed weather charts that nobody uses or even sees any more.

In the meantime, it would now appear that applicants are going to have to actually study the MATERIAL instead of the test questions and answers.

Frankly, I think that's a good thing.
