Where to Fly from Afton, WY

I'm flying a Husky from Afton, WY to Indiana in mid Oct. and have a little time to do an overnight with some camping gear and my wife. She is a good co-pilot but not a good camper. I want to break her in easy so she'll let me come back to the west for more. Got any suggestions. This is one of those deals if I do it right she'll look forward to it and we'll make a lifetime of memories I do it wrong I'm on my own with a short leash.

If you would happen to go through Sidney NE on your way east you could camp on the airport here. There are no showers on field but there is a courtesy car available or Cabela's shuttle van. There are several motels within two miles of the field who will pick you up. If you think you might come this way PM me. I will do what I can.

Hi Hicountry,

I was through Sidney last February and think I saw your American Champion in the hanger. I can't remember if I saw a Citabria or a Scout but they always leave a good impression. I always enjoy the hidden hanger treasures. If it was yours it was in the hanger connected to the FBO. I was hauling customers to Alpine, WY for a snowmobile trip and stopped for lunch and equipment at Cabela's. We had a little battery trouble and the guys at the airport went out of there way to help. That's what I love about flying... it's full of great people.

I don't know which part of IN you're going to, but a little south of course - try Beaumont, KS. Thats where you can land on grass, taxi into town on the road, and they have tiedowns across the street from the hotel...... No gas, but plenty of less expensive gas in the area.

Personally I'd fly west and tryout one of Coyote Ugly's stock tanks and maybe get a personal serenade to boot. That would really impress your wife. :P

I think I'd try to camp at Cabela's.....I mean, IN Cabela's! Kinda like that movie a couple years ago (Home is where the heart is) where the pregnant gal lives in a Walmart? Cabela's-- talk about a luxury camp!

Cessna Skywagon -- accept no substitute!

Cabela's does have a nice campground outside their main store...showers and all.

Bad,

Ed at Sidney Aviation is good people, and if you overnight there I would recommend taking advantage of his hangar. My cub was totaled in a hailstorm there earlier this summer. I got there too late in the night and didn't want to bother Ed... wish'd I'da bothered him now...

Take care, Rob

Run just about due north, just north of Yellowstone Park entrance, on the east side of the Yellowstone River, you'll find Chico Hot Springs. You can land at the Flying Y and park there, though its' a private strip.

Chico is one of the best kept secrets in Montana. Simply THE best food on the planet, and great accomodations of all price levels.

hicountry,

It took about 70 patches the size of the bottom of a 1 gal. paint can, and then a few about 2 foot square. That got me to Wray CO. where I was spraying out of. From there I pulled the wings and trucked it home at the end of my season.
I did take the opportunity to drop the engine off at Western Skyways on the way home, figuring if I was going to go through the entire airframe again I may as well zero the clock on the motor too... They called yesterday and I think I should have it back next week :)
Was that your plane in the big hangar? I will be in Imperial and Benkelman for the summer next year. I will have to look you up.

Take care, Rob

My plane was in hangar 9. There was a different High Country in the big hangar. Made a trip over to Benkleman when we were at the flyin at St Francis KS in June.

If for some reason you get only 30 minutes into your trip and you have departed due east over the Wyoming Range, feel free to land at my private strip and rethink your options. It is on the sectional as Haas International. ID is 2WY3. Tie downs are on the east end of the runway.

Have a safe trip partner..

Thanks Stol for the invite. Weather is a crazy thing and its nice to have options. I plan on being in the area for a day training and might stop by. Husky 101 author Jeff Welch is going to give me a workout in the area.

Thanks, it was everything I had dreamed of! It's got a love it or hate it paint job but that is what is neat about Aviat, they will let you personalize your aircraft. I put 18 hrs on it in a couple days of cross country and am ready to go again. I'll need a little more time in the west and then it's off to Alaska. I feel real good about my aircraft choice. It is a great backcountry performer and a good cross country cruiser.

Baddog, I always stop at KRDK Red Oak, IA. They have the cheapest fuel and courtesy car, and they are real nice. As I said I stop there each time I go through that area. There fuel is listed on AirNav as $4.50. as of the 16th of Oct. They used to have sleeping accomadations at one time, but I don't know about that now. Bob
