Where to go the week prior to High Sierra Fly In??

So I have the whole week off prior to the High Sierra fly in and I want to make up for lost aviation time this summer. I'm going to spend the entire week camping and aviating. My only problem is I don't know where to go. Should I go north or south? I have no real agenda, just want to get away from it all and then come camp out with the rest of you yahoos at 3SGS.

Any (useful) suggestions?

Hi there Big John. I won't be in socal till January. Your still to hot. My moss has been taking a hell of a beating this summer here. Dry and extra warm.

Just kidding about dry and hot part. I love the sun. Give me sun and 60°- 86° any day. Look forward to seeing you at 3SGS, lets hope Oregon wx is good enough to get back and forth.

Cheers..Rob

I'm giving Chicken Strip some serious thought. I stopped in Sunriver once before but didn't see much to do there. There was an event that weekend and the FBO folks were REALLY unfriendly. I love most Oregon airports but...

I'm also give Soldier Meadows some thought. I've never been to their hot springs. I might try Alvord too if they are still airplane friendly.

Spend the night at Panamint Springs. One valley south of Saline.

Where do you land/camp at Panamint? I drove through there a couple months ago, and it's a beautiful valley.

There is an airstrip next to the gas station. Hell you can stay in hotel if you want to.... Maybe I mean motel! I know there's a restaurant in Panamint Springs, we all went there a few years ago.

No problems taxiing up to the gas stations? Or do they just expect that?

Sweet. Maybe instead of heading up north first I'll just hang around Nevada/Eastern Cal. Seem to be a lot of cool places.

Re: Where to go the week prior to High Sierra Fly In??

Not sure if.... cool.....would be the way you might describe Saline or Panament.
Check the forecast temps in that area..... Death Valley...Furnace Creek temps are normally +- 10 deg. higher than what Saline will be at the same time.....Panament would be similar.

Just saying.....

Yeah, we figure Death Valley Jan/Feb/Mar. It's really nice to leave Carson City at 5F, all bundled up and pre-heated, and 90 minutes later step out in golf shirt and shorts.

Though, have you guys checked out the prices down there this year? Almost doubled for rooms and food from a year ago. This is Furnace Creek and Stovepipe Wells, I haven't checked elsewhere yet.

I may head to Soldier Meadows for a day or so. Seems like a nice restful spot. Anyone ever stayed there?

Never stayed there, yet.... But it's a nice place to fly, and the folks seem real GA friendly.

Re: Where to go the week prior to High Sierra Fly In??

I have been several times and all are very friendly. Never stayed there however.

If you going there, you have to go find a place to land next to High Rock Canyon. Its awesome!

See you soon...
