Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

Ye, the KF's I flew down in Phx. did have the smaller tires/wheels, which obviously would account for atleast some of the speed dfference. And you are right, if they would drop some wt. (200#'s)off, the 7 it would be an even better plane than it is. One thing I did like with them was that the wings folded easy,so you have some cheaper options for hangaring.

All had the Rotax 912S and the Model IV and the S-7 have the same prop set at the same pitch. Anyway the Model IV sets you back in your seat on takeoff and is airborn right around 90 to 100 ft. solo, and climbs out at 1500 fpm. Cruise is around 108 mph at 5500 rpm. Right now the shortest I can get it down and stopped from a specific point is 250 ft. The Rans takes about 150 ft to take off and climbs at 1300-1400 fpm. Cruise is at 105 and I can get it down and stopped in 220 ft. The Kitfox Super Sport takes about 250 ft to leave the ground, climbs at about 1100 to 1200 fpm, and cruises at 110 mph. This is at 2200' elevation and around 80 degrees. Weight is a huge key, the Model IV only weighs 620 lbs while the Super Sport weighed 820 lbs, both with the same wing. Out of all three the Model IV is the most fun. It is a great handling light airplane that can do long X-countries. The Rans would be my next choice and the Super Sport flies more like a certified plane. I haven't been around the Zenairs that much, but I know they they aren't terribly fast, Cruise around 85 mph I think, but do good in the STOL derpartment. I have spent 1300 hrs behind the 912 series of engines and don't have one thing bad to say about them except for their prices. And for these little airplanes I wouldn't have any other engine. Hope this helps.

Newkid,
I can't recall if you had vg's on the S-7S when at my place....and if so what type and where. But, all I can say is I can land my 735 lb S7-S (with vg's) places I didn't take my 460 lb Kitfox I (no vg's, two stroke engine, flew it for 650 hrsTT). The S-7S seems to respond real well to vg's, and while 250 hrs is a fair bit of flying and you probably are a quicker learner then me, (younger anyway!) it wasn't until I passed the 500 hr mark in my first S-7 AND got vg's that I really got a handle on the low speed characteristics, and now at 2000 hrs plus in them I'm still learning how much abuse I can get away with, and it still has not bitten me in the ass! Abuse as in high AOA, low speeds, tight turns etc. I do remember my 65 horse KF got off shorter and climbed better then what I have now, nothing like keeping it light and simple.

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

courierguy,
I totally agree with that. I was just posting what I have noticed between them so far. It just seemed like I hit a wall with the S-7 where I couldn't do anymore with it, but being young and ignorant I'm sure there was plenty more I could do and just don't know it yet. And no it doesn't have VGs but everyone says that they help that thick Rans wing tremendously.

The S-7 is definitely easier to land short than the Kitfox. With the Rans you can more or less point it at the spot you want to land it at, or drag it in on the prop cut the power and plop it in. With the Kitfox you have to keep the nose up to come in slow, Which gets rid of your visibility out the left side. Plus they just don't like to loose airspeed like the S-7 does.

Sorry If I was ragging on the S-7 too much. Don't get me wrong I love ours a ton, and I would take it over the newer Kitfoxes any day.

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

GREAT landing newkid, nice and short, and that green grass sure looks good! Hard to believe vg's can make that even slower and shorter. Never being satisfied with good enough is part of the fun of being experimental I guess for me.

BTW, I often think of the super simple quick fold wings of my Kitfox 1, and miss them, that and the trailer I had for it. What NO ONE is making is a quick fold wing homebuilt, that disregards the need for highway width legality. In other words, being able to simply fold the wings to make hangaring easier or possible, and to ride out a strong wind while off airport and maybe not tied down too good (I used that feature more then once) and so what if it's 10' wide? For the rare time such a plane might be road hauled, get an over width permit, not that big a deal in Idaho anyway. Then you could have the best of both worlds : a big fat chord wing and no need to swivel them down when folding. I want a S-7S wing that folds like my old Kitfox in other words, and there isn't any such thing.

23 mph 90 degree crosswind again today, now I remember why I never messed with skis all the years I've flown off the mountain I'm on, the winter weather sucks, two days flyable in the last 2 months! Snowboarding is fun, but frigging flying has ruined me, and I was hoping to do BOTH today.

Where's that old "spirit of homebuilding"? Any way to put new fittings on the ends of the spars & on the fuselage attach like what a KF has?

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

The problem is that there is no removable turtle deck on the S-7. The flaps would hit the fuselage before the wings would be anywhere close to being folded.

I'm too busy flying! Or at least I was before the weather turned to crap. I was just pointing out a folding wing aircraft, even too wide for trailering, would have some huge advantages, possibly without some of the compromises of a road legal folder. Heck, even 12' folded would be better then 30'! My hangar is 40' wide, my shop door 19'.

One time right at sunset (1989) coming into Cheyenne Wyo., on the way back from Oshkosh. A huge thunder bumper was very near town, and as I Ianded (and yeah, I was keeping a real close eye on that thing) the lineboy came over and warned me about the forecasted hail associated with the usual strongs winds etc (and when they say windy in Wyoming they mean it), he offered to help me tie it down, and said if the hangars wern't already full due to the bad weather I could keep it inside. Well this was like an advert for the quick folding Kitfox1, I checked the remaining room in the hangar, and as stated no way was there room for a full size unfolded plane. For the Kitfox, at 8' or so wide and not too tall either it was a piece of cake. In it went, less then 5 minutes later, and no charge either, as they figured what the hell it wasn't really a full sized airplane! In the motel room that night I could hear the storm raging, it was a great feeling knowing the bird was safe. Good guys at the FBO!

Re: Which Kitplane to buy? LSA max g Folding wing Trailer

Despite being registered, I reached 403 FORBIDDEN messages when I tried to post a new thread, but it's probably just as well that I post my inquiry here, despite it being two years with no further postings.

MISSION/SPECS: LSA with a max gross weight near 1320 and maximum STOL capabilities, with folding (or routinely and easily removable) wings and similarly switchable wheel and float landing gear and great visibility, with doors that can be opened in flight. Preferably tandem, but I realize that may be impossible or severely restrictive given the other requirements. Engine: Prefer O-200, but that may be similarly impossible or restrictive? Which LSA's can take the O-200? Highest possible/practicable service ceiling. (Big differences do count; hairsplitting differences, e.g., 500 or 1,000 feet difference in service ceiling is considered too small to worry about.)

Rans S7__'s seem closest to what I want, but may have to "settle" for the Kitfox, probably a 4, but open to newer models.

"Needed" for aerial photography and observation and access to back country.

I'll appreciate any comments. I have read all of the previous messages and they have been very helpful.

I think you tried right when I was doing some security maintenance. It should work for you now. Always good to add on to existing threads though.

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

Hey all you Rans S7 guys, what speed do they stall at with full flaps?

I have a line on a 1991 which has been banged & needs some love.

Just wanted to compare your answer to what the current owner claims.

Thanks byeBill

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

The guys w/Vg's are stalling in low 30's I think. Pretty tough to get an accurate speed when it's that slow.

Slower then just about anything else, assuming he has them placed right and also has them on the hor stab. In grd effect/behind the curve? Fast run.......low to mid 20's.

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

Twister, I certainly wouldn't say you would be "settling" for a Kitfox. I do wish they made a tandem version-- That would be my perfect airplane.

Personally I far prefer the lighter, quicker control feel of the Kitfox over the Rans heavy Champ/Cub feel. My plane doesn't give up anything in cruise or STOL performance to my neighbor's S7 (with 20 less hp). He has an advantage in sustained climb, but I think that is the HP talking...

Without VGs, my IV stalls in the low 30s MPH, lightly loaded.

I'd love to have a 100 hp motor to see what the performance would be...

Why would you prefer the 912 (100hp) over the O-200 (100hp)?

Re: Which Kitplane to buy?

That is the subject of another thread.

viewtopic.php?f=11&t=6573&hilit=shootout

Basically, weight, fuel burn, oil consumption, and maintenance for starters.
Also modern technology vs 60 year old technology. In a light-sport aircraft every pound counts and having an extra 30+ lbs hanging on the nose is not optimum or desirable.
