While I'm thinkin exhausts

I am planning on upgrading my exhaust system this winter('56 C-180/Pponk O-470-50). Currently have stock, left side exit exhaust. Will probly go with the Knisely (doesn't seem to be any question with their quality)dual exhaust system, but they don't have/make the shrouds, which is why I am looking for a set, or someone who will make them.

Also have talked some with AWI, but response has been a little slow. Looks like they make pretty nice stuff, seem to be priced pretty close to Knisely, atleast for what I want. There system does come with the shrouds though, so that's a bonus..

I have also been looking at the Leading Edge Exhaust systems, which really look nice, but pretty pricey.http://www.wemakeyoufly.com/main_pre55_c180.asp Wondered if anyone here had any experience with them for a similar application as mine.

Thanks Gary

I use leading edge exhaust on my 206s. The quality is there. The new Knisley are also good for the price.

Did you notice any difference in performance, or just a nice beefy exhaust system?

Your's is a dual exhaust? Was there an improvenment in performance? My thinkin is it is a lot of extra money over the Knisely if it doesn't do anymore. I'm sure you had ther same thoughts. What made you go that way? I've heard the quality and fit are good, but so are Knisely's.

2 mufflers to burn out instead of one is all you'll gain. If you must, give Acorn Welding a Google. They are good Canadian boys that have treated me well over the years.

Gary,
I'll second the Acorn Welding folks. You should, at least, see what they offer.
Good quality stuff.
Not sure if the exchange rate would be beneficial.

Re: While I'm thinkin exhausts

I don't want this thread to get close to or into "Hot Air". But was wondering if anybody makes a quieter muffler for the 182? I'm thinking the less noise I make, the better off I'll be while flying through the back-country canyons and especially during rafting season along the Owyhee River and hunting season.

Re: While I'm thinkin exhausts

Hey Pat
Saee ya made it through Thanksgiving. I think for planes like your and mine, alot of the noise comes from the prop. I know my dad's 180 is pretty quiet, mine on the other hand, I've seen people plug there ears when I go by taking off. Powering back a little, and turning the prop down a little may do as much as anything????

Yeah, I saw that big long exhaust on Tom's plane and remember somebody making a comment about how quiet the plane was. Was just thinking. Yep..... made through the week so far.

Re: While I'm thinkin exhausts

I can't comment on any of the other manufacturers but I've had a few exhausts from AWI and been very pleased with their quality and performance. I know some of the guys up there and they're good folks, they'll certainly stand behind their product. Definitely recommend.

Yes, I have the dual exhaust. I feel I gained some hp with the LEES, but no measured results.

Re: While I'm thinkin exhausts

I've bought two systems from these guys and my mechanic was impressed by the fit. Don't know how they work out in the long run but they were hands down cheaper and worked great when new. http://aircraftexhaust.com/

Local a&p uses Acorn. Reccomends them. Not cheap but good rarely is.

Re: While I'm thinkin exhausts

I replaced my 180's exhaust with Acorn. The included shroud was one reason but they also have a unique shroud cutaway around the tailpipe to prevent any cracks in that area from contaminating the cabin air. The seaplane tailpipe extension comes with an STC as well. Good quality, perfect fit, and excellent service. I found pricing to be comparable between Knisely, AWI, and Acorn. I'm happy with my choice.
