Who is that jet up there ?

Air Traffic control for aviation fans

Every day you see planes in the sky....
We ask ourselves questions: what type of plane? Airbus A320,330,350? Boeing.....or other.
Where does it come from, where is it going, what is the altitude, what speed are they going, what airline company etc.
You can see all the information instantly on your screen.

Some tricks;
On the map you will see all the planes in the air.
To view your region or town, drag the mouse across in any direction…. And, you can zoom in by tapping with your mouse.
Click on a airplane, and on the left screen you will get all the info.
Airline, type, speed, altitude in real time, re calculated every 10 seconds.
On some you can also click on ‘view from the cockpit’

I'll have to check that out. I've been enjoying Flightaware.com app on my iPhone. It has the same feature "Nearby" tab and will have all the publicly viewd flights going over you.

What kind of trips me out. About 8-9 times out of 10. No matter where I am, when I stop and look up in the air I will see some kind of an aircraft. Kind of neat too that Boise is under some major routes between Euroupe and LAX. I'll often see some BIG Iron buzzing south over my house and look it up on Flightaware.

The program has some bugs. Right now there is Compass 5690, just west of Bismarck, ND, westbound. Click on him and it says he is Minneapolis direct Detroit. Hope he filled it up.

Re: Who is that jet up there ?

A few years ago on a bored night, I typed my tail no. into google to see what came up. One of the returns was a gossip board for a group of airplane spotters in england, someone posted that they had just found a Cessna 172, IFR from minneapolis to seattle at FL 350, and asked if that plane had that much range. After a few posts calling him a "newbie", someone pointed out that a northwest B-757 has been flying for over 3 years with it's Mode-s programmed wrong, they transposed 2 numbers, and it shows up as a 1957 C-172 on the web sites that track planes. That was a few years ago, I have no idea if it has ever been fixed.

Yeah, I still like Flightaware.com better (and it Free).

I believe Flightaware tracks some "VFR Flight Followings" flights, too.

Re: Who is that jet up there ?

Last winter (early 2012), I was working in a town in northern ontario when a co-worker and I noticed an airliner coming from the southeast, made a 180 turn, and headed back southeast. I immediately pulled up my Flightware app on my phone. It was a 747 with its departure and destination set as Montreal, Quebec.

After a bit of googling, I found out it was Pratt & Wittney's test plane. Possibly this one with a 5th engine?

Definitely a neat app.
