Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Colorado

While not directly aviation-related, survival and basic wilderness skills, sometimes called "bush craft" are an important part of flying the remote backcountry.

Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Colorado

Hi All-

Wanted to let you all know of my schedule for wilderness medical classes for this year.

Wilderness First Responder Recert., April 21,22,23, Durango, CO

Wilderness First Responder, May 1-5, Telluride, CO

Wilderness Advanced Life Support, September 7-10, Durango, CO

Wilderness EMT/Paramedic Upgrade, September 18-22, Telluride, CO

All of these courses are taught by a team that includes me (paramedic, pilot), and a team of experienced instructors. They are professional level courses that would be useful to anyone flying and camping remotely. The courses are typically 1/3 classroom, 1/3 skill sessions, and 1/3 simulations/scenarios. They all are certified and use curriculum by Wilderness Medical Associates.

PM me with any questions, if anyone wants to fly to the course locations I can assist with aircraft logistics and rides to and from the airport, and even loan you a bike.

For more info check out my website http://www.wildernessmedic.com

Re: FH-Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Col

This is really cool stuff. Though a full WFR certified course would be overkill for most of us. It'd be awesome if we could get a WFA course (shorter and less expensive) specifically tailored to aviation scenarios. I'd be down for that.

I let my WFR cert laps a long time ago. I need/want a refresher - but I can't commit to a 5- or 9-day course at this point now that I'm not guiding and working ski patrol.

Re: FH-Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Col

Agreed, my classes fill with folks who work or want to work in the outdoors or as proffesional rescuers. I always put it out there because I like hanging out with pilots and you never know who might sign up.

I have a 2 day pilot focused curriculum ready to go, time is all I am short of. Working on keeping the wife, kids, the fire department and ski patrol all happy takes all of it. Someday you'll see a Backcountry Aviation Medicine course. I even have the website up.

Glad to see someone posting this on BCP. I undertook wilderness medicine training back in '04 for a kayaking guide gig, and have appreciated the training so many times since then that I've lost track of the count. Great for parents, pilots, and people who play in the outdoors.

wilderness medicine for backcountry pilots

Hoping Brad will keep this topic/training alive for BCP'ers!
What we carry in our heads is likely just as or more important than what's carried in our backcountry packs/kits.
In conjunction with others on the forum, I'd be happy to help organize/host an east coast med class in the future... perhaps in Greenville, ME?

Re: Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Colora

Hi All-

Just another Bump for this Topic, a few of our courses are already full but if anyone is interested here are my current 2018 classes that still have space available:

Wilderness First Responder- Telluride, CO-May 14-18
This course is 5 days, mostly hands on, and is the standard course for guides, and others working in the outdoors.

Wilderness Advance Life Support- Durango, CO- September 20-23
This course is geared towards MD's, paramedics, RN's and PA's. Gives experienced practitioners the information and practice to focus on what is important in remote situations, and prepares you to advise adventuring folks on how to be prepared for the unexpected. This class is classroom heavy, with a few big simulations.

Wilderness EMS Upgrade- Telluride, CO- October 8-12
A hands on course for experienced practitioners. Great for EMT's, RN's, Paramedics, and also MD's and PA's who want more time practicing the skills.

All classes provide CE's toward maintaining or recertifying EMT, Paramedic, RN, MD, and PA.

If anyone flies to these courses I can assist with transportation and airplane parking arrangements. Send me a message with any questions.

Re: Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Colora

Hey Brad,
Want an ER physician x 10 years to help teach that pilot wilderness medicine class? I would be more than willing!!! Let me know if I could help. Oh and let me qualify myself just a little more, paramedic x 2 years before medical school, worked on a truck the whole time doing premed classes. Also did Outwardbound in Durango then did the wilderness medicine paramedic class as well in Durango. I love that stuff!

Re: Wilderness Medical Classes-Pilot/Paramedic Taught-Colora

Hi All-

Here's my yearly plug for our Wilderness Medical Classes in the Southwest. These would be ideal for anyone who likes to play in remote areas and be prepared. All of these classes take place in great flying destinations, there's camping available, and I would be happy to assist in transportation from the airport or helping to make sure your plane is looked after.

Wilderness First Responder Classes- The definitive wilderness course in medical training, leadership, and critical thinking for outdoor, low-resource, and remote professionals and leaders. While designed for those working in the outdoors, this is also a great course for individuals and families who's adventures take place far from easy 911 access.

April 8-14- Moab, Utah
May 13-17- Telluride, Colorado
May 20-24- Durango, Colorado

I will be teaching the Telluride and Durango courses, but all the courses are taught by experienced medical professionals with extensive experience working in remote areas.

Let me know if you have any questions, either PM or on this forum topic. More info can be had at Wildernessmedic.com , or give me a call 970-946-7630
