Wilson Bar in a Maule

Whilst perusing youtube I ran across this video of Wilson Bar and thought some might get a kick out of it.

The reaction when they see their a little hot and a little long is interesting. I'm betting if the camera had not been rolling the language may have been slightly different.

They also have one of Sulpher Creek that isn't as much fun. ;-)

I also uploaded one of Oceano (L52) that a buddy shot while he was riding along with me and my son on a clam chowder run.

Mark... nice Oceano vid. The first time I ever took a passenger up after getting my Private, I flew into Oceano with her.

I made a high and hot approach, but got er on. The takeoff is so fun to blast out over Pismo dunes. The takeoff seemed to take forever in that 152.

Zane,

I can't take credit for the video, only the lack of production skills. ;-)

When I have time maybe I learn how to edit the video with some audio, music, graphics etc.

I have never done a lot of video while flying but it sure is fun to see after the fact, so if I can talk co-pilots and passengers into doing more of it maybe I'll have some more to share.

Thought this would be a good spot to post a video I found on youtube.com

I thought this one was interesting...made my cheeks tighten just watching it:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/oHei4t76G7E&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/oHei4t76G7E&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Then there is this one that I thought was pretty cool.

Quit scaring me!

We had this thought a year or so back but no one ever debriefed what they could have done better in the maule.

which one, the one with the two guys at the campfire???? There were so many Maule videos that linked to those I spent a half hour watching that Blue and Yellow M4, which I think came up for sale a while back....

Having never been in there I don't know what the right approach is but what I would do different than the guys in the maule:

I think I'd be on the other side of the canyon, that should let you see the runway a little sooner with more time to make the go-no-go decision. One of the guys said "we has 60 kts on short final" I assume he said that because it was fast??? Can't be fast...gotta be dead on. They looked high to me, it could be because I make flatter approaches, no flaps.

The guys in the 180 made me tense up because of their turn back towards the airport...steep bank turns are fun but low in a canyon???

What about you G3...debrief us.

60 kts on short final is way too fast, unless your way over gross.
on edit: I haven't seen the video, but unless there is real gusty winds or something else going to justify the extra speed, 60 kts is awfully fast

stop,stop,stop,stop......we're stoppin', we're stoppin'!

In my opinion;
They were on the wrong side as Whee pointed out. Can't see the strip until the last second on the right side. Left side gives lot's of vis as early as possible.
They were a bit high compared to how I do it but again it is hard to see where the runway is when it's hiding around the corner and your setup leaves you with little time to pick up on visual cues and adjust.
60 kts too fast and combined with the height - bad, bad.
Once they were in the flare floating it appeared to me as though they continued to hold the three point attitude. If you want to stop you first have to get the tires on. RELEASE the back pressure to reduce the angle of attack and get the mains on. Another way to do this is to dump the flaps. Bottom line is get the tires on to start braking.
Just a few observations on my part. It wasn't that bad because they were upright in one piece but still things to learn from.
I've also seen a picture of a 185 upsidedown over the end with full flaps on.
Just remember if you are almost done flying and you pitch the flaps out, you'll be done flying and the brakes will work.
Best thing is just to have speed under control though.

Yeah, I've watched all this guy's vids on YouTube and he is always making really steep "yank and bank turns". He's a hot dog.

High and Hot in Big Creek

There also used to be a video on Youtube of a landing at Big Creek--completing the turn to final over the N. end of the strip, diving from way high and landing in the last 3rd. They made it but the pax was saying he was going to open the doors to help slow down!!! I think it has since been removed.

I do not think that the video was done in a Maule. Just about every Maule guy I know gives me crap for using nautiocal miles, They do everything in MPH. This guy said he was doing 60 kts on final. Proves he was not flying a Maule.
