Windsock substitutes

So, what do ya do when you’re over an hour from town, it’s Sunday, and you’re missing your windsock? Mine blew off in the high winter winds of the high prairie. Need something for safe flying operations, so improvising seemed like the an option. It’s pretty embarrassing, but dang!, a dog food bag works pretty good in a pinch!

Not in a pinch, but creative repurposing of license plates. Washington used to make us buy new license plates every seven years. I still have a pile of them in my shop. My poor man's wind T.

Re: Windsock substitutes

This flag is the largest in the state of Washington. It's at the Thorp exit on I90 six miles west of Ellensburg, WA. It measures 40 feet by 80 feet and the flag pole is 150 feet tall. If you are flying and see it stretched out like this, the wind is howling. It's been up since last October. I can see it from one point on my exercise walk every day and a couple days ago is the first time it has been flying this proud so I drove down there to take a picture. My wind gauge at home 4 miles south is more sheltered and recorded 43 mph.
This is the Gap wind that comes through Snoqualmie Pass. Runway 29 at Bowers field in Ellensburg is oriented directly into it.

The rippling sound it was making while I stood under it to take this photo was really loud. Quite impressive!
