It’s one thing to emergency bivy in the winter because of an unexpected overnight, which anyone flying in the winter should expect and be equipped for. It’s another to be comfortable and willing to go back for another round without cringing. Winter camping has its charms and is a great activity when done right.
When flying, I use a large tipi with liner from https://seekoutside.com/8-person-tipi-pre
and a wood stove from https://fourdog.com/ultra-light-i-dx/
As multiple people pointed out, know how to make a snow shelter and practice it a few times. My whole family - kids included - also know how to construct a lean-to and bed from northern trees and how to start a fire with an all-night lay.
When that expensive nylon or dyneema tent goes up in flames you’re going to need some shelter in which to stay alive. Sleeping in the plane might work for one guy, but it’s not warm and isn’t a viable multi day solution in the winter (frozen condensation everywhere).
