Wood tire covers (requesting pics)

Just replaced the mains on my Stinson currently parked outside (hopefully only temporarily). I want to make some covers and heard a great idea about wood covers that double as stands. I'm pretty handy with wood projects and I have an idea in my mind of how i'd like to make them, but I'd love to see any pictures out there to get a visual.

Thanks for any pics you guys have!

Those are pretty much the mega end of the spectrum. Lots of simpler ones out there. My 31’s live outside and I use $8 RV tire covers from Amazon. I’ve seen wooden ones with small storage area for cleaning supplies, oil, and such. That gets big and heavy quick.

That is brilliant. Functions as a step for getting up to the wing, and could probably be used as a winners' podium in a pinch if you put them together.

Seems like a pretty simple design and build. Upgrading to 5/8" plywood would probably be a rigid enough when built into a box without being too heavy. Pilot drill and cinch it together with 1 1/4" construction screws, Elmer's in the seams. Paint the hell out of it, inside and out. Maybe add some silica sand on the decks during painting for traction.

Don't forget to paint a "Remove Before Flight" warning on them.

You need a way to tie them down. I was out flying and a big wind hit the airport. It sent the boxes down the apron and by sheer luck they didn't do any damage to the plane parked behind me. Next stop for them was the dump and I use the AK Wing cover tire covers now. If your have big tires you really don't need refueling steps as they work well for that purpose.

Wanted to follow up with some pictures of what I came up with. Hopefully it will help someone else interested in something similar.

I built in chocks to the boxes, so the boxes slide in and then a back panel that is tongue and grooved slides over and covers the backside. Casters on the end make it easy to roll around and they work great as stands to clean the top of the wings.

Super happy with them and thankful for the inspiration I got here!

Ditto on the tie them down comment. You go flying and a wind comes up (natural or propeller generated) and you may be paying someone else’s repair bills.

Very nice work! Notice the patroller door on your Stinson, is that an STC or 337 field approval?
Thanks
