Can aircraft really Water ski "Barefoot"?

Early morning anglers are treated to the spectacle of four T6 Harvards from

the Flying Lions Aerobatic team water skiing across the Klipdrift Dam near

Johannesburg , South Africa .

Lead by Scully Levin, with wingmen Arnie Meneghelli, Stewart Lithgow, and

Ellis Levin - this renowned airshow display team rehearse a sequence for the

newly launched "Aviation Action" television program on SuperSport TV. Arnie

Meneghelli from Academy Brushware, owner of the aircraft, has this to say,

What we did today I believe is a world first"

This unusual act, approved by the South African Civil Aviation Authority

(CAA), and supported by Castrol Aviation, was meticulously planned and took place under the watchful eye of divers and paramedics that were on site.

Ya know, I've done some really stupid things in an airplane. I mean REALLY stupid. But I always chickened out with waterskiing, even though my buddies did it all the time and keep telling me it's not a big deal.

Just fear and common sense getting in my way I suppose.

I know several people who have water-ski'd in their airplanes. I also know at least one who tried it unsuccessfully.
In fact, just this morning, another forum had a post about a Kitfox that went into the Columbia River near Skamania WA over the weeked. Official line is loss of power, but it sounded to me like a water-skiing mishap.

I saw these pictures last year. They really need to be towing a banner that reads "DON"T TRY THIS AT HOME - WE ARE IDIOTS"

The precision and the number of things that all have to be "just right" to allow this type of stunt has to be incredible. I don't know whether to admire them or say they are setting a bad example!

"Bad example" what are we 5 year olds, if a pilot doesn't have enough sense to fly within his means he deserves to put his plane in the drink. We shouldn't have to have warning labels and safety inspectors all over the place. I think it's called thinning the herd or cleansing the gene pool.

yeah, I'm sure no one is stupid enough to try something like that on a whim. After all I didn't hear of anyone trying some of the stuff in Big Rocks and Long Props. Or was it long rocks and big props?
