I have been to the nps sites many times, My primary plan is to use the peavine cabin if I can land within a reasonable ski distance. I figure may creek would be a good last option. I did not realise how much that strip is used that time of year.
I'll be flying a souped up pacer on straight skis. I'll land at Gulkana and fuel up as well as carry extra. Should be lots of fun.
Do snowmoblilers use those areas that time of year? Or are they even permitted there?
I'll definatley have your place in mind when I head that way. Great weather link too. I had not seen that one before.
Thanks again
The Peavine is a pretty straight forward landing strip and is immediately accessible to all kinds of cross country skiing on the Chitastone and Nizina rivers. In fact it is a great trip from my place up to the Peavine on skis. Right around the corner from Peavine is Glacier Creek -- also easy to get into with a Pacer and great for skiing. Both airstrips should have about 24 to 30 inches of snow on them, so make sure you drag them first or at least have suitable snow-shovels with you. My Husky does just fine in this deep snow, and your Pacer should perform well as well.
Snowmachines are allowed anywhere in the park, and some even go up the Nizina and Chitastone, but you will probably not run into them. Actually it would be good if they have been up the rivers and laid down some tracks for skiing. At any rate, at that time of year, you will be skiing in heaven. I love to ski up those two rivers. We generally ski with Polks rather than packs. Oh, your going to love skiing up there -- just beautiful!!
Also, since you are going to be on skis, don't limit your landings to the airstrips. You can land most anywhere up there, especially father up the Nizina close to the Nizina Glacier. There are a couple of landing strips up there (Amphitheater and Doubtful), but you may have a hard time finding them with all the snow on the ground.
You will have an absolute ball up there especially if it is bright and sunny in the day, but cold at night -- enjoy.
